Five Minute Friday – Rest

five minute fridayIt’s Five Minute Friday, hosted by Lisa-Jo Baker at The Gypsy Mama.  Five minutes of free writing flash mob goodness.

If you aren’t familiar, the rules are simple.  Lisa-Jo Baker gives a single word writing prompt every Friday.   Each of us have five minutes to write and post.  No editing, no second guessing, no fancy stuff.  Just plain writing – straight from the heart. (click HERE for the official rules and details).  Then we go visit other participants and shower them with comment love.

Last week, the word was HOME

This week, the word is REST.

Five Minute Friday

The word is REST.  What an irony.

Today of all days I’m writing about rest.  The kids spent the night at my mom’s last night and for once, I am able to sleep in and take things at a slower pace.

I got rest last night.

It’s been spring break all week.  While there are some aspects of it I really didn’t enjoy, the rest part has been good.  I’ve enjoyed the slower pace and the break from our mile-a-minute mornings.

I’ve gotten rest this week.

And in the clear light of this morning, things look different.  It turns out I can see things more clearly when I am rested.

When I look at the world through tired eyes, I see mountains where there are really only molehills.

Mountains of laundry.  Mountains of papers to file.  Mountains of Legos.  Mountains of trash.

It all felt overwhelming, like I was losing not just the battle but the war.

That was last week.

Today I woke up refreshed and renewed.  And the mountains dwindled back down.

come to me all who are wearyRefreshed and renewed and rested.

Jesus said “come to me all who are weary, and I will give you rest.”

Not only has this been a week of slowing down and sleeping in, it’s been a week of resting.  It’s been a week of lingering over a coffee cup until I finish my prayer.  A week of sitting on the back porch, listening to the voice of God on the breeze.  A week of curling up in my favorite chair to read THE Good Book, not just a great book. A week of watching winter give way to spring.

STOP.

Five Minute Friday

  1. Susan, stopping in from FMF…oh, I remember those few, cherished days of quiet when the kids were away. Time to rest, reflect and look with satisfaction on all God’s done in our lives. It makes it easier to go tackle those mountains of laundry and the endless list of chores!!

    Blessings!
