It’s Five Minute Friday, hosted by Lisa-Jo Baker at The Gypsy Mama. Five minutes of free writing flash mob goodness.
If you aren’t familiar, the rules are simple. Lisa-Jo Baker gives a single word writing prompt every Friday. Each of us have five minutes to write and post. No editing, no second guessing, no fancy stuff. Just plain writing – straight from the heart. (click HERE for the official rules and details). Then we go visit other participants and shower them with comment love.
Last week, the word was WHAT MAMA DID.
This week, the word is ORDINARY.
Five Minute Friday
“I LIVE A LIFE OF ORDINARY WONDER.”
It’s in my little bio that goes at the bottom of every blog post (at least the ones I remember to paste it into).
So what in the world is “Ordinary Wonder” any way?
The ten minutes of my life where my son stood next to me and watched as the insect laid her eggs on the sill of our front door. He insisted we shoot a video and take lots of photos.
Later that day, he leaned against my shoulder, wedged in the bed between my husband and I as he narrated the video and told his daddy all about bug eggs.
As his small voice droned on and on about the bug and the eggs and everything his young google-foo had taught him, I greedily sniffed the warm sun from his hair.
The five minutes I sat mesmerized at a picnic table, watching a tiny ant struggle to move her giant payload from one side of the table to the other. It was a journey of inches, hindered by the wind that kept catching her and blowing her off course.
And the small voice in my head whispered Proverbs 6:6 into my heart.
Go to the ant, you hater of work; give thought to her ways and be wise:
A lesson of a lifetime, inscribed in my heart. Now captured on my iPhone and stored away for when I need it next.
And it’s this.
The story in photos. An unrepentant heart that softened. The reconciliation that happened. The answer to a mother’s whispered prayers.
Each ordinary. We were leaving to run errands when we spotted the insect. I was watching my kids at the playground when the ant caught my eye. I was disciplining my child when the prayer was answered. Ordinary moments of motherhood.
Each filled with wonder. My son, the blossoming scientist. Wisdom carried on the breeze. An answered prayer.
