Five Minute Friday – In Between

It’s Five Minute Friday, hosted by Lisa-Jo Baker at The Gypsy Mama.  Five minutes of free writing flash mob goodness.

If you aren’t familiar, the rules are simple.  Lisa-Jo Baker gives a single word writing prompt every Friday.   Each of us have five minutes to write and post.  No editing, no second guessing, no fancy stuff.  Just plain writing – straight from the heart. (click HERE for the official rules and details).  Then we go visit other participants and shower them with comment love.

Two weeks ago, the word was LISTEN

Last week, I had issues.

This week, the words are IN BETWEEN and I bawled like a baby as I wrote this.  Sorry.

In. Between.

Not one and not another.

He stands on the cusp of two worlds.

He has one foot firmly planted in the world with stuffed animals, baby voices, and the desire to hold my hand during the scary parts of a movie.

The other foot is planted in the world with video games, big brothers, and attitude.

By September, he will be full blown tween.

It is his last summer of sweetness.

in, between…

He still wakes up early and runs to our room, eager to slide in, between the sheets.  He still wants the hugs and cuddles of early morning.

His older brother sleeps in.

inbetween..

The tears slip, inbetween my glasses and my skin.  Unbidden, they roll as I write.

I love who he is becoming.  But I will miss the word “mommy” just as I miss the smile full of baby teeth that once graced his face.

in between…

The days of their childhood slip past like sand slipping in between my fingers.

And I am left… holding a memory.

Five Minute Friday

STOP.

his last summer of sweetness

I have a passion for encouraging weary worn out mothers to find joy in everyday motherhood and peace in unlikely places. I have two elementary school boys, one nerdy husband, and two cats. I have a strange fascination for bad puns, the color pink, socks, and books. I worry about running out of toilet paper, wine, and chocolate.. I serve an amazing God. I live an ordinary life filled with wonder.

I am visiting from FMF and as I read your post, the tears slid behind my glasses as well. My little boy is in the summer of in betweens now too. The 'in between little toddler and big preschool boy'. So much letting go for us Mama's to do as our babies grow up. Thankful that God is gracious and gives us little bits of letting go over the years before they leave home as adults.

AWWW. But you know wonderful stages are coming. My son is in his best one since about that time, now that he's 27!

  3. My daughter is in the in-between stage too. She is four years old and transitioning from toddlerhood to being a little girl. Children grow up so fast. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us.

    • I suspect that parenting is one long transition. They never just get to a phase and sit there. Enjoy your little girl – the time is all too fleeting.

  4. Oh, I FEEL you, Susan. My 9 year old daughter is in between, too. Sometimes she is still a silly little kid and sometimes I can see her starting to be very teen-ish. I just want her to stay young and innocent forever. I don’t want her to become all teenagery! –Lisa

    • I see the glimpses of that teen behavior in my almost 8 year old (and more than glimpses in the 9 yr old). I’m not thrilled with all of what I see. On the other hand, I’m proud of the independence they are showing. I’m not having to make PBJ sandwiches this summer because they are making their own. I can live with a little tween attitude if I get out making lunch most of the summer. 🙂

  5. OH MY…*wiping tears away* that was beautiful and who expertly wrote how all moms feel…
