Five Minute Friday – Home

five minute fridayIt’s Five Minute Friday, hosted by Lisa-Jo Baker at The Gypsy Mama.  Five minutes of free writing flash mob goodness.

If you aren’t familiar, the rules are simple.  Lisa-Jo Baker gives a single word writing prompt every Friday.   Each of us have five minutes to write and post.  No editing, no second guessing, no fancy stuff.  Just plain writing – straight from the heart. (click HERE for the official rules and details).  Then we go visit other participants and shower them with comment love.

Last week, the word was ORDINARY

This week, the word is HOME.

Five Minute Friday

The topic is home – and I’m giggling with glee.

I’m on day SIX of writing blog posts that involve the word PINK and was wondering how Five Minute Friday would fit in.  And it does.  Perfectly.

On Wednesday, I had a lunch date with hubby.  With a sick kid all of the week before, it was the first time we’d had a conversation in over a week.  It was the first time I’d had his attention to talk about what mattered to me.

And it was all about the home.

More accurately, it was all about how I was FINALLY trying to turn the house in to a home.

For two years, our house has been a house… assaulted by the constant forces of a parade of contractors during our remodel.

We’ve never been houseless, but I’ve often felt homeless.

And last week, something in me just snapped.   We’re not done.  It feels like we’ll never be done.  But I’m done.

I’m done living in limbo.  I’m done feeling homeless.  I’m done living in undecorated spaces.

In the spaces that are done (or in some cases just “done” or “done enough”) I want to reclaim them and make them my own.  I’m ready for pictures on the walls, finalized furniture placements, throw pillows, decorative vases, and more.  I’m ready to transform my kitchen from “barely functional” to optimized and ready to rock.

I’m focused on the kitchen and my bedroom.  It’s all I have.  But those two spaces can finally feel like home.

My bedroom is currently a manly space – dark brown floors, grey bedding, brown furniture, and pale yellow walls.

I sat across the table from my husband and posed my question.

How would you feel about a little pink?

Pink in the bedroom.  Be still my heart.

I was prepared to negotiate percentages.  I’m talking about using less than 5% pink.  Not enough to threaten a man.  He was more interested in tones of pink.

I pulled up my pink page on Pinterest and passed him my phone.

I could live with this.  I like this shade of pink.

Be still my heart.

only you can make our house a homeHe was pointing to the hot pink bag from Thirty One Gifts – the pink Lotsa Dots fabric.  (That link is to my own store.  Feel free to order one if you want.  It would make my day.)

And I’ve been tickled pink ever since.

In this boy home filled with boy things, I need a little pink.  And my husband understands.

The very best part was when he told me

Only you can make our house a home again.

Be still my heart.

STOP.

  1. Loved this. It is so true that we make our house a home. May you find success in doing so. And may the introduction of “pink” bless your family!

    • Thanks for visiting. I know it’s silly, but the pink thing was really important to me. It’s helping me mentally reclaim the space from sweaty men with hammers.

  2. I’m tickled pink you’re in the pink and homelessness is on the run! Now, go get you some pink light bulbs (assuming they still make them) and spruce up your bedroom lamps. Go. Now. Why are you still sitting at your computer?! : )

    • I wasn’t at the computer. I was at pre spring-break field day… followed by the fabric store to buy some pink fabric. I may not be able to sew very much, but I can make a rectangular pillow.

  3. YES!! This is in my planning right now, too. We will be moving into a townhouse that we own in June and all I can think about with it is making it OUR home, not a rental that I can’t change a bit. I’m thinking about where pictures will go, what colors to paint and how to make it feel like us. If I use any pink I’ll be sure to credit you for the inspiration. 🙂

    • Amy, I’ll bet you practically LIVE on Pinterest right now dreaming. It’s exciting to be where you’re at – dreaming and planning. How fun! If I can offer a suggestion, hold off on actually buying stuff until you get moved in. Don’t ask me how I know, but men aren’t impressed with having to move boxes of stuff that was purchased for the new house. It’s much easier to just get it delivered after you move in. 🙂 Enjoy this! Enjoy the process and treasure it.
