Five Minute Friday – Grace

It’s Five Minute Friday and I’m back!

Oh baby I’ve missed this.  Mmmm.

Somehow, it feels so right for my first post after the 31 Day series on Anger to be a Five Minute Friday post.

No intense planning.  No pre-work.  Just me.  Showing up and letting my fingers fly.

Today’s writing prompt is… GRACE.

Five Minute Friday Grace

Five Minute Friday

At first glance, I probably don’t embody GRACE right now.  There is nothing graceful in my movements.

If you see me move, you’ll notice the stiff knee and the tight grip on my cane.  You’ll notice the bandage on my knee and the grimace of pain too.

If you read my words, you might notice the lingering impact of pain meds… sorry.

Two days past getting my knee scoped, I feel anything but graceful.

Come on in, look closer.

Look past the comfy knit thing I’ve been sleeping in for two days.  Look past the bed-hair.  Look down.

See my socks?

Those socks are grace.

My feet were cold, and my son was eager to get some socks for me. He was eager to care for me and take care of me.  He brought me the most cheerful socks he could find.  Never mind that they’re scratchy and slide around on my feet as I walk so that the heel ends up on the top of my foot.  Never mind that I’d wanted different socks.  I’m wearing these.

Because when he brought me these socks, his face beamed with pride and my heart filled with grace.  They’re just socks.

Look past the mess in the kitchen, please?

I know I can walk… a little.  I can manage a few dishes at a time.

But those dirty dishes in the sink.. those are grace.

My boys are working to take care of me.  They’re working together to master all the things I do and make look so easy.  It’s hard for them to figure it all out, to slow down and see all those small details in the midst of their boyish enthusiasm for life.

They’ll get to the dishes.

Until then, I have the grace to ignore them and not nag.

Ignore the mess.

We don’t do perfect in my house.

We do grace instead.

Come on in and sit with me.  Even if you need to move a pile off the chair, come and sit.

It’s enough to know that you’re here.

STOP.

we do grace instead

I have a passion for encouraging weary worn out mothers to find joy in everyday motherhood and peace in unlikely places. I have two elementary school boys, one nerdy husband, and two cats. I have a strange fascination for bad puns, the color pink, socks, and books. I worry about running out of toilet paper, wine, and chocolate.. I serve an amazing God. I live an ordinary life filled with wonder.

  3. Oh Susan, I loved this post! Seeing all the grace as you mend from your surgery and your family “blesses” you is precious. Praying for your scoping to mend quickly and perfectly for you to be up and running again soon!

  4. Oh Susan, I love this picture into your home as you mend in all things grace through the blessings of boys and beloved as they tend to you. Praying your scoping will have been a blessing to your body so you can run your race in the motherhood.

    • Amy, thanks so much. I’m mending quickly. Being forced to slow down and take care of myself has been an unexpected blessing. Having to rely on my children isn’t easy, but they’re growing from this. I can already see the blessing and God’s plan in motion. For that, I’m very thankful!
