Beyond – Five Minute Friday

Five Minute Friday - Story I participate in “Five Minute Friday” from Lisa Jo Baker’s Tales from a Gypsy Mama blog.  She provides a writing prompt, and I have five minutes to write to that subject.  No editing, no fussing.  Just. write.

People all over the web join in the free-writing exercise.  You can too.   I’d love to see your writing in the comments of her page or shared on your blog.  Just let me know what to look for and I’ll cheer you on.

Two weeks ago, I wrote about “enough.”
Today, I write about “beyond.”

READY SET GO
BEYOND.

Beyond what?  Beyond the big blue yonder?  Off into space I go.

Beyond happy.  Beyond excited.  Beyond my patience.  Beyond where I want to go.  Pushing beyond my limits of endurance.  Yeah, I’d like to run a marathon someday.

Beyond my comfort zone.  Yes.  Exactly.

Last night I attended a webinar where SimpleMom shared her story.  Tsh talked about how she started blogging as a prescriptive blogger.  Lots of “how to” and “do this” posts.  But then she hit a wall and ran out of things to say, she got burned out.  She returned to her focus and began blogging about her story.  She changed to a narrative blogger.

When I started ThisHappyMom, I planned to be a prescriptive blogger, even though I didn’t have the word for it.

But then God changed that.  He called me to be a narrative blogger and share my story and struggles.

It was beyond my comfort zone.  Waaaaay beyond what I was comfortable with.  But I did it anyway.  I started slipping my belief and my story into posts.

The response has been beyond amazing.

STOP.

That’s it for Five Minute Friday.

I have a passion for encouraging weary worn out mothers to find joy in everyday motherhood and peace in unlikely places. I have two elementary school boys, one nerdy husband, and two cats. I have a strange fascination for bad puns, the color pink, socks, and books. I worry about running out of toilet paper, wine, and chocolate.. I serve an amazing God. I live an ordinary life filled with wonder.

  1. LOVE this! I only began my blog Upside Down Homeschooling a little over a month ago. Previously, I had a personal blog that was very difficult for me to keep up with. I felt like I never had anything to say. When God laid the idea for my new blog on my heart, He promised me He would give me the words to say and He has not failed me. I agree with what you said, the response has been amazing. 🙂

Thanks for this post. I’m coming from 5 Minute Friday.

    • Until last night’s webinar, I didn’t have the words to express the change in how I approached blogging. I’m thankful for the words to express the change.

I have several other abandoned blogs that just weren’t sustainable. But this one is. It feels so different to be blogging based on God’s purpose and vision for my life. Happy for you to be experiencing the same amazing thing! Thanks for the visit.

  2. Hi
What’s the difference? Or rather… what is a prescriptive and a narrative blogger???

    • Prescriptive blogging (according to Tsh) is where you tell people what to do. You “prescribe” solutions to their problems. Top ten ways to skin a bear, How to cook the perfect egg, Three things you need to know about baby bottles, The best way to potty train your child….

Narrative blogging (according to Tsh) is where you share your story and your life.

Her point is that people can go to any magazine or corporate blog to get the prescriptive content. They come to blogs to build a relationship with the blogger. That’s because the blogger shares her story.

  3. I like this.

  4. Dear Susan,

It’s marvelous when we let God get a hold of our lives and take us out of our comfort zone. It’s there He grow us and uses us to bless and encourage others.

    In Christ…Susan

    • Dear Susan,
Thanks. Stepping out of my comfort zone is easier because of encouragement like yours.

      In Christ, Susan

  5. Stopping over from the 5 Minute Friday. I have been blogging four over 4 years, simply sharing my heart — joys and struggles. I too have had a great response. May God continue to bless your writing!
