Five Minute Friday – Comfort

It’s Five Minute Friday, hosted by Lisa-Jo Baker at The Gypsy Mama.  Five minutes of free writing flash mob goodness.

If you aren’t familiar, the rules are simple.  Lisa-Jo Baker gives a single word writing prompt every Friday.   Each of us have five minutes to write and post.  No editing, no second guessing, no fancy stuff.  Just plain writing – straight from the heart. (click HERE for the official rules and details).  Then we go visit other participants and shower them with comment love.

Last week, the word was BRAVE

This week, the word is COMFORT.

Five Minute Friday

In the darkness of the night, I hear his feet hit the floor.  The wood planks beneath his feet echo each step, I can hear each footfall in the silence of the night.

He is running.

By the time he explodes into my room, his face is covered in the tears that are streaming down his face.

I can’t see in the dark, but it seems he has cleared the room in one giant leap.  He earns a new speed record for traveling the distance between his room and mine in the space of a heart beat.

He launches into my arms, and as I wrap my arms around him, he whispers

i had a bad dream mommy

I wrap my arms around him and press my face against his forehead.  I brush the tears away and roll him into our bed.

Before his head hits the edge of my pillow, my son goes limp.  He is already back to sleep, his nightmare forgotten.

The warmth of his body and the sweetness of his trust lull me asleep almost as fast.

As I drift, I feel my husbands arms wrap around me, around our child, encompassing us both in his world.

this is comfortThis.

This is comfort.

The comfort I give to my child, the comfort my husband brings to me.

This.

STOP.

I have a passion for encouraging weary worn out mothers to find joy in everyday motherhood and peace in unlikely places. I have two elementary school boys, one nerdy husband, and two cats. I have a strange fascination for bad puns, the color pink, socks, and books. I worry about running out of toilet paper, wine, and chocolate.. I serve an amazing God. I live an ordinary life filled with wonder.

  1. Your words provide such a vivid picture I could hear my own son jumping into bed with me (like he did earlier this week). Beautiful post. Here from FMF.

  2. What a beautiful picture of comfort! Coming over from FMF. Thank you for sharing. Have a wonderful weekend!

  3. This was beautiful, Susan! One of the things I cherish most about being a mom is knowing that my presence is what brings comfort to my little people in times like that. Knowing that just fills me with happiness. It’s such a fulfilling feeling like all’s right with the world and I’m doing exactly what I was meant to do 🙂 –Lisa

I have similar stories like these to share. My husband is also my comfort zone as well. My kids when they are quiet and calm also bring me a lot of comfort. Great post!
