Five Minute Friday – Afraid

5 Minute FridayIt’s Five Minute Friday, hosted by The Gypsy Mama.  Five minutes of free writing flash mob goodness.

Squeee!!!

If you aren’t familiar, the rules are simple.  Lisa-Jo Baker gives a single word writing prompt every Friday.   Each of us have five minutes to write and post.  No editing, no second guessing, no fancy stuff.  Just plain writing – straight from the heart. (click HERE for the official rules and details).  Then we go visit other participants and shower them with comment love.

Last week, the word was AGAIN.

This week, the word is AFRAID.

Five Minute Friday

Afraid.  Yuck.

My first thought is that I’m not afraid very often.  I’m really brave about killing the big bugs, going on adventures, trying new things.

But then reality hits.  There are plenty of things I’m afraid of.  I have a full blown phobia of walking on stairs made from expanded metal.  I don’t like to see the ground through the stairs.  Glass elevators threaten to give me a panic attack.  I don’t like to walk across bridges.

I’m not exactly afraid of heights.  I can stand on the edge of a cliff without a problem.

But I’m afraid of mechanical failures.  Stuff like stairs, elevators, and bridges all require me to trust in the engineering and construction of some unknown person.   I’m afraid they messed something up – that the stairs will collapse while I am on them.

Silly.  But true.

I feel fear when I should have faith.

And I know it’s not just stairs and bridges.  When it comes to the big dreams and goals for my life I am sometimes paralyzed by fear.  Just when I should trust God the most, I find myself clinging to the ground and unable to move.

Ouch.

STOP.

  1. Susan, excellent post! I feel the same way sometimes, paralyzed with fear when I should just trust God! Have a wonderful Friday! Jennifer

  2. Ah, yes. Those mechanical failures…potentially…that’s what fears are for me quite often.

What ifs conjured up in my head.

Well said. As usual. : )

    • I love “what ifs conjured up in my head” – perfect way to describe my wonky thought process. Great phrase for it.

  3. I used to have a recurring dream about falling in an elevator. And the elevator always turned on its side and gashed open. I haven’t had one of those dreams for a long time. Do you suppose I’ve overcome some fear? 😉

I think sometimes, yes, we’re afraid of our own dreams, afraid to move out in faith…and forget that He goes before us.

    Have a great weekend!
