No More Whining, Complaining, or Arguing (and this time, I really mean it)

It’s “no whining” week in my home and on my blog.  My goal is a total heart adjustment for myself and my kids.  Why?  Take a look at my twitter feed over the weekend.

Before that, there was the tweet last week… The one where my son said “Mommy, I have an idea, lets have a contest to see who can complain the most on the way to the store.”    From that tweet (I think it was last Friday) until mid-day yesterday, there was just a simmering of un-ease in my heart.  Something was wrong, but I couldn’t put my finger on it.

By yesterday afternoon, I was ready to yell “NO MORE WHINING, ARGUING, OR COMPLAINING – EVER”  but it was the follow-on whispered thought that caught my attention.  My heart whispered “and this time, I really mean it.”  Ouch.   I imagined whining and complaining to my husband about how much whining and complaining the kids were doing.  When he started (in my imaginary conversation) to tell me to look at my own heart, I started to imagine arguing with him that I wasn’t to blame.  Aack!

Happy moms like me aren’t supposed to whine, argue, or complain — right?  Not unless there’s something really worth complaining about (like my steak being 90% gristle) or something really worth taking a stand on (no, you may not wear my silk robe as part of your super hero costume).   So what am I doing thinking this way????

So I declared “no whining week.”  It’s pretty much happiness bootcamp  – for me and my children.  I’m done with the whining.  I’m not tolerating the argumentative “yes, but” to everything I say.  I have declared a cease-and-desist to the tattles and tattle backs.  I will not tolerate an ungrateful heart.  No.More.Whining!

I’ve been busy researching some ideas (um, I promise I did a bit more than troll Pinterest for an hour last night).  I’ll continue looking, but so far I’ve come up with some strategies to start the week.

  1. Good stuff in, bad stuff out.  I’m re-examining what we have been feeding our brains to make sure none of it encourages or models an ungrateful spirit.  I am replacing it with positive content that feeds a heart of gratitude.
  2. Add more good stuff.  We have a few scriptures tagged to memorize this week.
  3. I’m making that complaining jar I pinned.  I’ll modify it to use something other than quarters.  I want my kids to have visual feedback on how much they are complaining, arguing, and tattling.
  4. We  are starting a family thankfulness journal.  Nothing fancy.  Just a discarded notebook where we can write down things we are thankful for.  Deliberate thankfulness is a great antidote for an ungrateful heart.
  5. I am removing reasons to complain.  I spent some time yesterday thinking about why I’ve been so “grumbly.”  I’m working actively to remove the things that are making me stressed and unhappy.
  6. Praise.  Lots of praise.  Praising my kids for doing things right.  Praising my Heavenly Father for a whole list of reasons.
  7. Prayer.  Lots of prayer

That should be enough to get us started.

ps – in the spirit of total honesty, not only did my kids whine about something while i tried to type this post, they got into a fist fight.  i’m thankful to be their mom.  i’m thankful i’m home with them to be able to work through this heart issue head-on.  i am *not* complaining about my kids and their bad attitudes.
