Three gifts every mom needs

This is my third installment of gifts every mom needs (and can give herself).  No matter your budget, age, size, or hair color I can promise you that these gifts are a perfect fit!

In 2012, I shared a guest post on Mothering From Scratch and recommended that every mom give herself the gifts of Simplicity, Significance, and Perspective.

In 2013, I suggested that every mom give herself the gifts of Grace, Laughter, and Peace.

It’s 2014 and I’ve dreamed up three new gifts to give yourself.

How to be the cool mom on the block

I’ve worked hard for my title as “cool mom” from the neighbor kids over the past five years.

(Not really)

It’s been a hugely competitive event with all the neighbor moms vying for the trophy.

(Seriously, not really)

Now that I’ve won the title of “coolest mom on the block” I’d like to let you in on my secret.

(Um, there isn’t a trophy or anything, but I’d like to think the other kids on the block envy my sons because they have such an cool and amazing mom.)

Crimes of Motherhood – I am the meanest mom ever

I am the meanest mom ever – at least according to my kids.

Personally, I figure that means I’m doing something right.

They have a different view.  They said that I’ve committed crimes.  I’m accused of…

(dum dum dum….)

Happy First Day of School to Me!

It’s the first day of school for my family.

I remember the first few years that the house would empty for the first day of school.  The first year or two, it was a shock.  I honestly struggled to figure out what to DO with myself.

The very first year I had both kids in preschool, drop off was at 9am.  By 10:30 I had gotten a much needed haircut and finished grocery shopping in peace.  The groceries were put away, dinner was in the crockpot.  I felt so…. lost.

Last year, I wrote a snark laden post on what to do for the first day of school.  In honesty, it was directed at my own former self.

10 ideas for how to enjoy back to school with thishappymom.com

At the very end of the post, I said

The first day of school should be yours to enjoy.

I meant it.   [Read more…]

The Guilt Trip

So….. now that I’m back from my trip to Atlanta I can tell you all the details of my trip.  My guilt trip that is.

While I was in Atlanta, my in-laws came to visit and hang out with my husband and kids.  Since my husband isn’t exactly communicating about the details of what happened, I’m left to fill in the details.

You know how that works right?  I fill in the details with the worst possible scenario.

And I end up on…

The Guilt Trip. [Read more…]

31 Days of Joy in Motherhood – Day 31

Yesterday, I took some time to read back through the whole series as a single body of work. It was… interesting.

On the whole, I accomplished what I set out to do.  But… [Read more…]

So what’s the big deal about motherhood?

motherhood - 31 days of joy in motherhood from thishappymom.comMotherhood – 1. the state of being a mother; maternity. 2. the qualities or spirit of a mother

Not exactly a comprehensive definition.

Not exactly a job description that makes me excited to wake up and start being a mom.

Honestly, it kind of leaves me asking the question –

What’s the big deal about motherhood? [Read more…]

12 Simple Ideas for Well-Being

As I laid out on Day 2 of 31 days of Joy in Motherhood, our well-being plays a role in our ability to experience joy.

I’ve tried to write this post several times already, but ended up deleting my efforts.

12 simple ideas for well-being from thishappymom.com

Be thankful I waited!

The first one was preachy.  The second one was filled with bad puns (well-being and being well and how well is your being… and beans). Then I wrote a big confessional about all the ways I’m not taking care of myself.  Boring!

In the process, I’ve figured out what I really really really really want to say about this. [Read more…]
