Joy in the Words of Others (Joy Quotes)

joy quotesI wanted to share some Joy Quotes with you today.

Obviously, since I’ve been writing about Joy for over two weeks straight now (This is day 18 of 31 days of Joy in Motherhood)  I’ve done a ton of “research” about Joy on Google.

One of the things I’ve discovered is that there is a ton of great information out there, as well as a bunch of stuff that’s just “meh.” [Read more…]

Being a Joyful Leader in Your Home

being a joyful leader - 31 days of joy in motherhood with thishappymom.comI admit that “being a joyful leader in your home” sounds a little odd.  Maybe a little boring.  But it’s been bouncing around in my head for long enough.  It’s prompted some changes in our home that are working.

Mom, what’s your leadership style in the home?

Do you know? Do your kids know? Do you have a vision for how leadership happens in your home?

Being able to get our kids to do what we want is the byproduct (in part) of effective leadership.   And yes – when it happens we feel joy. [Read more…]

The Happy Mommy Game

I regularly get visits to my blog from people googling “the happy mommy game.”

the happy mommy game - 31 days of joy in motherhood

While I don’t know of an actual formal game for happy moms, it’s kind of fun to imagine what the rules would be.  You might even say it gives me JOY to imagine it.

After musing it over, I’ve come up with several different ideas for the happy mommy game.  Each version is a great way to find some joy in motherhood. [Read more…]

Singing for Joy (your life deserves a soundtrack)

singing for joyThis morning, I woke up singing for Joy.  Literally.

By the time we were getting dressed, they were singing right along with me.

I hadn’t had my coffee yet, and I am NOT a morning person.  To me, the day just isn’t worth starting until about 10am.  But put the right play-list on, and I’m a dancing fool at 6am.

When I start the day that way, it tends to set the tone for the whole day.  I can tell you right now that it’s going to be a great day at my house because I managed to start it with joy.

Want to know what had me singing in my hairbrush this morning? (my kids joined in on the chorus) [Read more…]

Express Yourself – Find Joy

express yourself - day 5 of 31 days of joy in motherhoodConfession: When I first jotted down the topic “express yourself” as part of the 31 Days of Joy in Motherhood series, I started singing the Madonna song.

(and as I type this, I’m still singing it.  if you feel a need to put on a super pointy bra and dance around with your underwear outside of your yoga pants, i totally am to blame.  sorry.)

(and if that made no sense, go watch the music video on you tube. but be warned… it IS madonna.)

So how does “express yourself” relate to Joy?

You Can’t Outsource Motherhood.

It’s true – you can’t outsource motherhood!

I always giggle at the annual report where they calculate the replacement value of a stay at home mom (or what her annual salary would be.)

Have you looked at it? According to Salary.com, I should be paid over $112,000 for 2012.

(updated 2014: Salary.com now provides a custom calculator that allows you to customize your mom salary based on location and number of kids. It even lets you print a “paycheck.”)

That’s nice.

Can someone send me a check? [Read more…]

Joy is a choice we make

Joy is a choice we make.

The uncomfortable flip side of that is that we can also choose “un-joy” – sadness, discontent, unhappiness, bleh-ness, and whatever other term you want to use for the days when there is no joy.

(Depression is, arguably, a different animal.  When the brain chemicals get messed up, it’s hard to set things straight.  I’m not talking about THAT kind of un-joy.)

The more I’ve written about joy and the further I go into the 31 Days of Joy in Motherhood, the more I’m convinced of this basic truth.

The Prospect of Joy Part 2: Goals

the prospect of joy

Yes, goals.  (don’t be scared, i promise it won’t hurt.)

Last week, I shared a post titled The Prospect of Joy that laid out two very different definitions for prospect.

The second definition was about how a prospector searches for treasure and was an encouragement to see our children as the treasures that they are.

The first definition was about the relationship between prospects, hope, and goals and how they help us find joy.

Today, I’d like us to talk about that first definition some more.

Learning From Your Children

learning from your childrenToday, I’m asking if you are learning from your children… and if so, what have you learned?

This fits into our 31 Days of Joy in Motherhood series under the broad concept of seeing our chldren as treasures like we talked about in the Prospect of Joy post.

(as a quick flash back – one definition of joy includes “the prospect of having what one desires.”  prospect… old prospector out searching for gold… children as treasures.)

One of the most profound questions I ever heard at a MOPS meeting was
