Caprese Salad Recipe

Caprese Salad (tomato, mozzarella, and basil salad.) It’s a great summer dish that highlights perfectly fresh tomatoes and basil.

Traditionally, it’s made with round slices of tomato and fresh mozzarella (about equal sizes) alternated with basil leaves sandwiched in between the layers.  It’s delicious.

My favorite part is using some crusty bread to sop up all the extra olive oil goodness, topping the still slightly crusty bread with the tomato, basil, and cheese.

I’ve made it several different ways.

My favorite coffee shop even serves it in sandwich form for lunch.

Personally, I like mine with a little balsamic syrup drizzled on top.  I also like it with Maldon Flaked Sea Salt (affiliate link).

Perfect for fresh ripe tomatoes in season.
Ingredients
  • ¼ pound fresh tomatoes
  • ¼ pound fresh mozzarella
  • 10 to 25 basil leaves
  • 2 to 4 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 to 4 tablespoons balsamic vinegar (syrup) -- optional
  • cracked black pepper
  • good quality salt
  • crusty bread
Instructions
  1. Slice the tomatoes and cheese (either into ¼ inch slices or bite sized pieces).
  2. Arrange tomatoes, cheese, and basil on the plate.
  3. Drizzle the olive oil and (optional) balsamic on top.
  4. Sprinkle with a pinch of salt and a crack of black pepper.
  5. Enjoy salad style, or serve with crusty bread.

If you’ve never had this dish, put it on your to do list for the summer.  Wait until you find (or grow) some beautiful vine ripened tomatoes and then go for it!

  1. Yum! Those salads look awesome! I like to use my tomatoes with avocados for a quick breakfast side to go with eggs.

  2. that is the ONE big thing I miss with dairy. but I can do it with tomatoes and avocados, or even tofu!

    • I hadn’t thought about avocado with it, but I’ll bet it would be fabulous! What about a soy yogurt cheese? Would that work?

    • I hope you enjoy it. When the tomatoes are still warm from the garden, sometimes it’s enough to make the mozzarella cheese get a little soft. mmmm…

  4. I’m loving the heirloom tomatoes this time of year and a caprese salad is the perfect way to enjoy them. I keep a pot of basil from Trader Joe’s on hand and just snip off some basil for recipes like this. The balsamic vinegar is so good on this, it’s not optional in my book!
