But what if I’m not strong enough…

When I’m faced with new challenges, I like to take a step back before I embrace them. Sometimes, it’s just to get a running start. More often, I’m dealing with some version of the question “but what if I’m not strong enough?”

I worry that I’ll fail.

Spectacularly.

Lately, I’ve realized that how “what if I’m not strong enough” gets answered has a big impact on what happens next. [Read more…]

Four reasons to STOP keeping a to-do list

When I decided to quit keeping a to-do list, it felt weird.  It felt like it should be this shameful, hidden secret.

I was definitely out of step with a world where everyone is focused on doing more, being more productive, and optimizing their efficiency.

But for me, it was the right choice.  At least for now.  I’ve got four good reasons why living list free is a good decision. [Read more…]

10 Secrets for Staying Motivated in the Gym

Recently, I shared that (much to my confusion) I was turning into somewhat of a gym bunny. It was a tongue and cheek post (I still shop in the plus size department, there’s no way anyone would look and me and say “gym bunny”) but it does celebrate some of the changes I’ve seen in my life since the first of the year.

As of this morning, I’m at my lowest weight in 15 years – obviously, something has changed. How can I NOT celebrate that!

When Kathy from Mothering from Scratch left me a comment asking what my secret was, it took me a few days to come up with an answer. [Read more…]

Need More Time? Quit Doing These Five Things

As I shared Monday, we all have the exact same amount of time each week.  As I’ve struggled to add hours of rehab time for my knee to an already full weekly calendar, I’ve frequently felt like I just need more time.

I can’t get it all done.

(The really comforting thing?  No one else can either.  NONE of us get it ALL done.  Some people are just better at getting the visible stuff done.) [Read more…]

168 Hours – That’s all I Get

If you are trying to figure out the significance of 168 hours, it’s the number of hours in a week.

24 x 7 = 168.

For the past nine months, the number has haunted me. [Read more…]

10 Opportunities for a Fresh Start

Today is the day my kids (finally) headed back to school after a long Christmas break.  It’s also the day my husband (finally) went back to work.  Tomorrow, I get a fresh start.

Since we live in Houston Texas, it’s unlikely that we’ll be missing any school days due to snow.  As long as the heaters in the school work, we should be fine.  If you’re curious, it was 28 degrees with a 56 percent humidity when we woke up this morning.  In a home with all tile floors and only a forced air heating system, that’s mighty chilly.

So for me, tomorrow is my official start to the new year. [Read more…]

Resolution 2.0

Last year, I wrote an extended series on goals and New Year’s Resolutions.  While I didn’t finalize my resolutions in time for New Year’s Day, my theory was that the new year didn’t officially begin for me until the kids went back to school.

You can read all about my rationale for delayed resolutions in a post from EXACTLY one year ago today.  Given that I’m in the exact same spot 365 days later… well… sigh. [Read more…]

It turns out I don’t do I can’t

Here’s the deal. I know it’s two weeks from Thanksgiving and I “should” be writing about all things Thanksgiving.  But I can’t.  Why? As it turns out, I don’t do well with “I can’t.”

Since I can’t do I can’t, I’ve decided to jump out of an airplane and do outrageous things instead.  Want to join me?

Happy Half-Year Day

Today should be celebrated as “Half-Year Day.”

I’m officially adding it to our family calendar and traditions.

It’s July 1st.  That makes it as close to half-way through the year as I care to calculate.   So today is the perfect time to re-group, re-think, and re-prioritize.

It’s a good time to check in on my resolutions for the year and make adjustments, just like way back when I was sailing out of sight of land.

In case you want to join me, here’s what I’ve been thinking through today.

Happy Half-Year Day Checklist [Read more…]

Got Goal? The exciting next chapter

got goalWay back at the beginning of February, I shared with a post titled “It’s almost Febraury – Got Goal?”

It was all about how I set goals for the month and what I thought I’d be able to accomplish.

Right about now, if you tried to talk to me about my February goals, I’d probably clamp my hands over my ears and chant “lalalalala I can’t hear you!”

Sometimes, that’s how it goes.   [Read more…]
