Top 10 signs I’ve lost the war on laundry

Posted on Jun 13, 2013 in ThisHappyMom | 14 comments

You know how I feel about laundry. Like most of you, I spend a lot of time and energy loathing laundry.  It gives me comfort to know I’m not alone.

It got me thinking about how we all treat laundry as if it’s this ongoing battle, and how we sometimes declare an all-out war on the pile of dirty laundry that is running our lives.

What would it look like to lose that war?

Old School Blogging – The Alphabet Meme

Posted on Jun 12, 2013 in ThisHappyMom | 4 comments

I’ve been on vacation since the start of June, so I’m a little late to the Old School Blogging party. I was blissfully unaware until Crystal of MommiFried tagged me in her post. She was tagged by Kim of Co-Pilot Mom,  The whole thing is being hostessed Elaine of The Miss Elaine-ous Life and Jennifer of Jennifer P. Williams.

In theory, this is old school blogging at it’s finest.

If I tagged you, you’re supposed to kick it old school style with your own post! Don’t forget to tweet about Old School Blogging with the hashtag #OSBlog, too.

My son is obsessed with margaritas

Posted on Jun 11, 2013 in ThisHappyMom | 2 comments

My son is obsessed with margaritas.

When we go out to eat, he always wants to know if I’m going to have a margarita.  Even if we’re eating breakfast.   I really can’t explain why because I’m more likely to order iced tea or wine than anything else.

Still, he’s obsessed.

Obsessed with margaritas.

Before school let out, he made a bad choice for breakfast (drive thru sugar) and had a rough day at school.  He ended up getting a color change. A color change is what our school uses to talk about when you’re out of warnings and on the verge of taking a trip to the office.

Watty’s reaction was to decide that he should NEVER eat sugar or anything from the drive-thru ever again.

While I welcome a break from the endless begging for drive-thru food, it’s not realistic to think my son can go the rest of his life without eating sugar, refined carbs, or anything out of a paper bag.

(if you can raise your kids differently, good for you. i just know what works for us. i’m not participating in the food wars.)

Instead of my son’s black and white thinking, I decided to talk to him about making the right choices based on the circumstances.  This would be why we refuse to feed him a donut on a Monday but don’t mind the occasional weekend donut.

It was the day I’d been flying high on that accidental energy drink.

Things I Shouldn’t Drink

Posted on Jun 10, 2013 in ThisHappyMom | 7 comments

I’ve come to the conclusion that there are just some things I should’t drink.

I’m talking about energy drinks.

I’ve only had one on purpose. It was a bad trip and I’d really rather not go into the details.  It was ugly and I felt horrible afterwards.  The after effects of an energy drink just weren’t worth the fun of all that extra energy.

It was enough for me to say “never again.”

(kind of like when people drink too many margaritas, or so I’ve been told.)

Recently, I accidentally drank another energy drink.

I knew partway through the can that I was in trouble.  I felt like I could fly.  I could see smells.  Given that this was happening during prime writing time, this wasn’t good.  My keyboard couldn’t keep up with my fingers. Neither could my brain.

The good news was that, unlike the other time, I didn’t end up with heart palpitations and cold sweats.  I’m also happy to report that I didn’t have that crashing feeling at the end.  Better, but still… never again.

(kind of like the difference between too much premium tequila and too much generic tequila. theoretically speaking)

Energy Drinks = Things I shouldn’t drink.

Thankful Thoughts – Mountains

Posted on Jun 9, 2013 in Thank | 6 comments

This week, it was really easy to think of some thankful thoughts to share.

As you might expect, I’m thankful for mountains.

Living in Houston Texas, my family and I don’t get many chances to enjoy mountains.  To be honest, we get a little excited when the land is anything other than flat.  Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE my hometown.  There’s a lot to love about Houston. But from time to time, getting to see actual mountains is pretty cool.

I’m downright thankful for the opportunity.

Thankful Thoughts about Mountains.

For the past week, I’ve been surrounded by mountains and the overwhelming amazing beauty of our world.  I’m in awe of what God has created.  Time after time I’ve stared open mouthed in wonder.

Wow.  God made that.

psalm 36_6

I was filled with AWE.

I was filled with WONDER.

I was filled with THANKFULNESS.

psalm 90_2

Psalm 121 NIV

I lift up my eyes to the mountains—
where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.

He will not let your foot slip—
he who watches over you will not slumber;
indeed, he who watches over Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.

The Lord watches over you—
the Lord is your shade at your right hand;
the sun will not harm you by day,
nor the moon by night.

The Lord will keep you from all harm—
he will watch over your life;
the Lord will watch over your coming and going
both now and forevermore.

isaiah 55_12

God has been so good to me.  I’m so thankful for our time in the mountains.  It has been an amazing week.  I’ve been blessed beyond measure.  Seeing the majesty of the mountains this week has truly been a gift beyond measure.

What are you thankful for?
