My Kids Make Me Laugh: Wise

My Kids Make Me LaughMy kids make me laugh, sometimes when I shouldn’t.

When they make a wise crack or smart aleck comment, I know I shouldn’t laugh.  I know I’m not supposed to encouraged their behavior and that I’ll regret laughing.  But sometimes I can’t help it.

On those occasions, I try hard to walk out of the room discretely to giggle out of sight.  Or I try to act like I’m laughing at something totally unrelated (like whatever e card my friend just posted).

(i have no earthly idea where my kids learn this behavior.  it’s not like either of their parents have a witty or irreverent streak.  honest.)

But sometimes, I can’t help myself.

The other day, there was a teenager (or maybe young adult) on television.  I wasn’t paying much attention so I can’t tell you if it was a show or a commercial.  Sorry.

The announcer voice booms and asks

What do you want to be when you grow up?

The young man on the television responds with a series of answers, each of which was accompanied with the appropriate image (so if he had said astronaut there would have been a picture of an astronaut floating in space).

He listed artist, rock star, cartoon animator, roller coaster designer, rodeo clown, scuba diver, race car driver, and video game designer.

Without missing a beat, GoGo looks at the television screen and shouts

What about being a WORKER when you grow up.  Ever think of that?

I pretty much lost it.  All I could think of was that my son was saying “get a real job, ya bum!

My kids make me laugh!

I know I should encourage my kids to talk back to the television.  They’ll master that skill without my help.  But it was just so funny to hear my seven year old sound like a grouchy old man.

GoGo used to say he wanted to be the boss of a city when he grew up (mayor).  Now he says he wants to be the president of his own country.

Apparently, he expects the youth of today to become hard workers with “real jobs” in his imaginary country.

How have your kids made you laugh today?

I have a passion for encouraging weary worn out mothers to find joy in everyday motherhood and peace in unlikely places. I have two elementary school boys, one nerdy husband, and two cats. I have a strange fascination for bad puns, the color pink, socks, and books. I worry about running out of toilet paper, wine, and chocolate.. I serve an amazing God. I live an ordinary life filled with wonder.
