12 Simple Ideas for Well-Being

As I laid out on Day 2 of 31 days of Joy in Motherhood, our well-being plays a role in our ability to experience joy.

I’ve tried to write this post several times already, but ended up deleting my efforts.

12 simple ideas for well-being from thishappymom.com

Be thankful I waited!

The first one was preachy.  The second one was filled with bad puns (well-being and being well and how well is your being… and beans). Then I wrote a big confessional about all the ways I’m not taking care of myself.  Boring!

In the process, I’ve figured out what I really really really really want to say about this.

Your own well-being matters.

Being healthy and taking good care of yourself is essential.  It is a gift you give to yourself and to your family.

When you feel good about yourself, you are happier.  (and the opposite is true)

When you are physically healthy, you have more energy to do all that stuff on your list AND play with your kids.

When you are emotionally well, it’s just better in all kinds of ways.

When you are spiritually well, life makes sense and things get easier.

It. Just. Works.

12 Simple Ideas for Well-Being

I’m constantly bombarded with stuff that’s supposed to make me healthier and more well.  Between all the different aspects (physical, emotional, spiritual, relational….) it’s overwhelming.

And constantly changing.

It’s more than I can do or keep up with, but I can manage a short list of stuff.

So can you!

  1. Drink enough water each day.
  2. Get off the couch and play every day as a family.  For just ten minutes.
  3. Take vitamins.  (At least the vitamin D because it makes a huge difference for me).
  4. Keep up the scheduled maintenance on my girl parts, my teeth, and my eyes.
  5. Find a simple de-stress trigger that works (and does not involve drugs or alcohol).  (for me, it’s crochet)
  6. Have healthy friendships.  Nurture them.
  7. Be authentic and real.
  8. Create a small space each day to think, to pray, and to dream.
  9. Choose Joy.
  10. Sleep well.
  11. Be Thankful.
  12. Laugh.

That’s it.

12 ideas for well being

All of them are simple.  They fit into a life with small kids. They work WITH your role as wife and mother.  They work with your desire to be a happier and more joy-filled person/wife/mother.

Yes, I’m sure there’s another 20 things that you think “should” be on the list.  So, put them on your list.

Or, put them in the comments and let me know what I missed.

This is Day 26 of 31 Days of Joy in Motherhood.

I have a passion for encouraging weary worn out mothers to find joy in everyday motherhood and peace in unlikely places. I have two elementary school boys, one nerdy husband, and two cats. I have a strange fascination for bad puns, the color pink, socks, and books. I worry about running out of toilet paper, wine, and chocolate.. I serve an amazing God. I live an ordinary life filled with wonder.

  1. Good ones!! I’ll add a few more and I’m sure you’re get others adding more too.

Say “I love you” a few times a day to your kids and spouse.

Don’t sweat the small stuff (I know it’s a cliche – but so true)

Be nice and smile to the people you encounter everyday – like the grocery store clerk, the postal worker, the lawn care people etc

Regularly do things to help the less fortunate. For some pople that might be monthly, others daily or weekly

  2. I am glad you waited, because this is just right. I was half-afraid to read it, because it seems to be an issue that invites extremes: proponents of “putting myself first” vs. proponents of “never put my own needs first.” You hit the perfect note here.
