Jumpstart your Joy

jumpstart your joy - 31 days of joy in motherhood from thishappymom.comYou can jumpstart your joy any time of day (or night).   Remember when I wrote about our musical mornings and how they got us singing for joy?

Guess what?

It works all day long.  And you don’t even need a radio (or whatever device you use to play music on).

This is so cool.  You have to try it!

 How to Jumpstart Your Joy

Raise your hand if you know the lyrics to “If You’re Happy and You Know It.”

If you’re happy and you know it clap your hands

If you’re happy and you know it clap your hands

If you’re happy and you know then your face will surely show it

If you’re happy and you know it clap your hands

(bonus points if you just did some of the hand motions, particularly the part where you put your fingers to your cheeks to make pretend dimples.)

Now, raise your hand if you remember Droopy Dog or Slow Poke Rodriguez from Saturday morning cartoons?  Or Eeyore?

(those are YouTube links, just in case you don’t remember)

Now, try to sing the Happy and You Know It song as Droopy of Slow Poke or Eeyore.

I bet you can’t do it.

No matter how hard I tried, there was no way to make it through the Happy and You Know It song in a depressed voice.

Even when I was in a bad mood.

(i was in a really bad mood yesterday when i woke up to giant styes in BOTH eyes.  i couldn’t see, the light hurt, and my eyes hurt.  i couldn’t read blog posts or tweet or watch TV.  not good.  but this STILL worked.)

I tried it on my kids when they were in a bad mood.

(losing video game rights for getting into a fist fight over the controller put them in a bad mood.  go figure.)

I tried it on my husband when he was in a bad mood.

(“honey, i can’t cook or touch the dishes because of my eye” didn’t impress him.  go figure.)

None of us could do it.

See?  I told you it was cool.

The next time you’re around friends, see if anyone you know can sing the Happy and You Know It song like Droopy Dog or Slow Poke or Eeyore.

Consider your joy jumpstarted.

Yes, it’s silly. Yes, it made us giggle.  But you know what? It worked.

It’s almost the total opposite of faking happiness, and it still worked.

Your “Joy Assignment” today is to jumpstart the joy in your home.  Go do something silly with your family.  Singing like Droopy Dog is optional.

This is Day 16 of 31 Days of Joy in Motherhood.  We’re over half-way through the month.

I’d love to know, did this work for you?  Do you have anything silly that re-sets the mood in your home and jumpstarts YOUR joy?

  1. What a fun idea! I will have to try it. When things get gloomy here, we resort to tickle fights. We especially love the Tickle Daddy kind of fights (he’s very, very ticklish). Laughing together changes the mood completely.
