Romans 12:9 | really love them

I’ve been looking at what the bible has to say about authenticity and just had to linger on Romans 12:9

Love must be without hypocrisy. Detest evil; cling to what is good. (HCSB)

(I’ve also lingered on 1 Peters 2:1 where it says “So rid yourselves of all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all slander.”  It’s been an interesting few days.)

Romans 12:9

to love others really love them

When I’m making art with a scripture verse on it, I always check few different translations to see which I like best. Normally, the differences are pretty minor.

This time…. whoa!

Check this out.

The NIV version is pretty straight forward. It probably sounds familiar.

Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.

What a difference a translation can make. Try looking at it in the New Living Translation

Don’t just pretend to love others. Really love them. Hate what is wrong. Hold tightly to what is good.

This is verses 9 and 10 in the Message.  I love the part about playing second fiddle.

Love from the center of who you are; don’t fake it. Run for dear life from evil; hold on for dear life to good. Be good friends who love deeply; practice playing second fiddle.

I like how the Phillips translation talks about a “genuine break with evil.”

Let us have no imitation Christian love. Let us have a genuine break with evil and a real devotion to good.

But I think this is my favorite.

Be sincere in your love for others. Hate everything that is evil and hold tight to everything that is good.

So I’m curious…

Do you have a favorite translation of God’s word? Do you ever find yourself searching for the “just right” version to make your heart sing?

I have a passion for encouraging weary worn out mothers to find joy in everyday motherhood and peace in unlikely places. I have two elementary school boys, one nerdy husband, and two cats. I have a strange fascination for bad puns, the color pink, socks, and books. I worry about running out of toilet paper, wine, and chocolate.. I serve an amazing God. I live an ordinary life filled with wonder.
