Five Minute Friday – Friend

Here we are, back at Five Minute Friday!  Today is the day I write for the sake of writing.  After a long week of sick kids, a sick husband, post Easter candy craziness, a smart phone that is no longer smart, and some pure idiocy… it feels good to write.  It feels good to settle, however briefly, back into the routine of writing and blogging.

The truth is that I miss this.  On the days that I am silent, a small part of me shrivels inside. A tiny part of me knows that other stuff was deemed more important and resents being such a low priority. A part of me knows that when my life is so busy and hectic that I can’t hear my writing voice then things are very wrong indeed.

And so I keep a promise. I write.

Today’s writing prompt is… FRIEND.

Five Minute Friday

As we pulled out of the driveway from her house, I heard the question from the backseat.

Mommy, is she your friend?

While my answer was a simple “yes” on the outside, my insides were a jumble.

Were we friends?

Did I trust her?

Did we like each other?

Did she think of me as her friend? If I claimed friendship would it be one-sided?

What if I think she’s my friend but she doesn’t think she’s my friend?

My son must have been thinking the same thing, because his next question shook me further.

But mommy, is she your BEST friend?

The time machine took me, and suddenly I was standing on the playground watching the girls walk away in their matching hair bows and shoes.  I could still hear the ugly whisper of  “she’s MY best friend and YOU can’t play with us.”

I wanted to tell my son that I didn’t have “best friends” – not since that day.  I wanted to tell him to guard his heart and expect betrayal.

But that would have been untrue.

Instead, I told him the truth.

We may not call each other best friends, but I trust her with my heart… even the ugly parts that I wish weren’t there.

And I knew that the next time I saw her, I would tell her about the girls on the playground with their matching bows. I would tell her about the secret ugly spot that made me fear friendship for all these years. I knew that she would understand, that she understood the whole hair bow thing without me having to explain.

That’s when I knew… she really is my friend.

Yes, I remember the girls on the playground, and not being invited to the slumber parties. Thank you for understanding and expressing the reason that friendship can be so scary, but it is so worth it. I hope you have a lovely weekend.

  4. Oh, yes. You nailed it. When you trust someone and she knows those things that you usually keep hidden from the general public, that’s when you know you have a real friend. –Lisa
