Praying for my kids

I struggle with praying for my kids. I’m don’t feel like I’m good at it compared to how other women talk about praying.  Once I start comparing myself to others, I can’t find peace about my prayer life.

Before I became a mom, I would hear women declare proudly that they prayed for the future spouse of their child.  I’d look at the sweet darling toddler with snot running down his chin and think “lady, you’re nuts.”

I didn’t get it.

My grandmother was a prayer warrior.  I grew up secure in the knowledge that she prayed for me every day, whether I wanted it or not.  When she passed, I worried that she wasn’t there to pray for my own children.

The weight of that responsibility felt heavy on my shoulders. I felt incredibly inadequate compared to my grandmother. [Read more…]

MOMtor Monday – the blessing of a strong willed child

It’s my MOMtor Monday at Mothering From Scratch!

Go check it out!  the blessings of parenting a strong willed child

momtor monday strong willed

(Oh, and if you haven’t gotten the ultimate homemaking bundle yet… go grab it while you can. It’s worth it.)

To be honest, the timing could have been a little better.  Guest posts get written and submitted long before they are published (in this case about two weeks).  When I wrote the post, it was easy to see the blessings from raising two strong willed boys.  This morning… not so much.

Today was one of THOSE mornings.   It was the kind of morning that has me scrambling for my yelling journal because I have some things to write down.

This morning, we needed grace… like candy.   It was loud and messy and chaotic, even for a Monday morning.  It was everything my guest post was not. I felt like a fraud.

I strive for authenticity on my blog… for honesty even when it’s uncomfortable.  Raising strong willed boys isn’t all sunshine and rainbows.  It gets messy.

It’s been a long time since I first locked horns with my son in a two-day long battle over peas.   That’s when I first learned the importance of picking my battles.

It’s been an even longer time since the whole hot dog incident that humbled me and taught me to see divine lessons in messy places.

But as I looked back at those stories (and the countless others too messy or too trivial to share) I began to see the bigger picture.

I could see how God uses those moments to draw me closer to Him and to help me grow.  I saw how the breakthrough moments leave my boys with teachable hearts… and how the lesson God has so recently engraved on MY heart is so easily taught in that moment.

I can see God’s wisdom in giving me boys who are every bit as strong willed as I am.

With that perspective, I’m able to see the blessing once again.

Five Minute Friday – Friend

Here we are, back at Five Minute Friday!  Today is the day I write for the sake of writing.  After a long week of sick kids, a sick husband, post Easter candy craziness, a smart phone that is no longer smart, and some pure idiocy… it feels good to write.  It feels good to settle, however briefly, back into the routine of writing and blogging.

The truth is that I miss this.  On the days that I am silent, a small part of me shrivels inside. A tiny part of me knows that other stuff was deemed more important and resents being such a low priority. A part of me knows that when my life is so busy and hectic that I can’t hear my writing voice then things are very wrong indeed.

And so I keep a promise. I write.

Today’s writing prompt is… FRIEND.

Five Steps to Reboot Monday

Here it is, the Monday after Easter and it’s anything but a normal day, but instead I need a reboot.

I had expected today to be a Monday – filled with menu plans and calendar catchup and laundry. I had expected to waive goodbye to my kids and husband and then dig in to a productive day.  Nope.

It’s the other kind of Monday.

The kind with two sick kids and husband who decided to work from home… just in case those man flu symptoms turn into something more serious. *sigh*  And here’s me… still needing to do laundry and plan menus and clean the house.

It’s not even 9am and I already feel a need to pull up my big girl panties and reboot the entire week.

(Yes, I said WEEK.  We got all dressed up for Easter Sunday.  We got in the car.  And THEN we realized that one child was too sick to attend services.  We attended church via Livestream.  The fancy Easter meal I had planned turned into chicken tacos.)

I know I’m not alone. I know a big part of motherhood consists of having our plans interrupted and adjusting our priorities (and attitudes) around whatever crisis has just happened.  Sometimes, we all need a little reboot.

Eggs, Bunnies, and Jesus

I have to admit, after this round of egg jokes and egg related fun, my brain is a little fried.  I’m not egg-actly done with egg jokes, but I’ve gotten it out of my system for the year.

Perhaps it was the hard-boiled state of my brain that made it hard, but the other day when my kids asked me

Mommy, why does Jesus like eggs and bunnies so much?

I really struggled to answer them.  A lot of thoughts flitted through my scrambled brain, but giving my boys a thoughtful and honest answer they could understand required me to sit down in my thoughtful spot and have a good think.

Happy Egg-streme Procrastination Day

Today is tax day (aka Procrastination Day).

I find myself once again putting my entire life on hold while I make a mad scramble to finish our taxes before car line today.  I wrote about it last year. [Read more…]

Green peas and lamb

If Dr Seuss had ever tried to feed peas to my son, his famous book might have gone a little more like this….

(If you don’t recall my son’s long term aversion to peas, you might want to check out how Mr Picky got his name.

And yes, I’m calling this egg-themed.  I’m not done celebrating the egg just yet!)

Egg Humor in Video and Movies

In the quest to make this a multi-media egg-stravaganza on Egg Humor,  I’m sharing my favorite egg related videos from around the web.

Why?  Because I can.

(More accurately, because I’m still amusing myself with egg humor… and because it appears to be annoying my family.  The kids aren’t egg-actly enjoying all the bad jokes either.) [Read more…]

Eggs are bad for my marriage

Yup.  Eggs again.  I can’t promise this little egg-stravaganza will go all the way through Easter Sunday, but for now, let’s just roll with. After the conversation I had with my husband yesterday, I really don’t have any other option but to keep popping out the egg yolks… for at least a few more days.

If I quit now, it would look like I was backing down. I can’t do that.
