It’s Five Minute Friday! My favorite writing time of the week.
Last time the word was VISIT.
Today’s writing prompt is… HERO.
Five Minute Friday
hero.
The first thing I think about is the “Jesus You’re My Superhero” song that the kids sing at church.
See? Now it’s stuck in your head too.
When my kids were younger, they even danced along to the song. They’d put there hands over their heads in the classic “superman pose.”
I loved that joyous abandon – the way they would dance around the kitchen, zooming as they pretended to fly with Jesus.
I miss that sweetness.
In a world of tween boys, there isn’t much sweetness to go around some days. It’s more about eye rolls and deep sighs, body sounds, and fledgling attempts at sarcasm.
Don’t get me wrong. They’ll still do the hand motions and dance around with the song. They do it most Sunday mornings at church.
It’s just that now, they do it a dark room with techno lights zooming around. They only join in halfway through the song… after they’d made sure some of the other kids are dancing first… after they’ve giggled and eye rolled and pretended to be “too old” and “too cool” first.
They still dance.
In the kitchen, when the blinds are closed and the other kids aren’t around, my boys still dance with me. Time stands still and the world holds it’s breath as they join me one more time in the silly dance that ends in hugs and giggles.
They still dance.
(They also still secretly like this song by Go Fish. Start the video around 1:42)
STOP.
Five Minute Friday is hosted by Lisa-Jo Baker at The Gypsy Mama. Five minutes of free writing flash mob goodness.
If you aren’t familiar, the rules are simple. Lisa-Jo gives a single word writing prompt every Friday. Each of us have five minutes to write and post. No editing, no second guessing, no fancy stuff. Just plain writing – straight from the heart. (click HERE for the official rules and details). Then we go visit other participants and shower them with comment love
Ahh yes, the freedom of children songs and dancing. Thanks for this post. A helpful reminder to let loose like a child once in awhile and simply celebrate before the Father.
Nice to see I am not the only one who thinks in song lyrics. I love that your boys still dance, I have a daughter that is getting to the age where she wants to dance but not be the first to dance

I used to teach Sunday School and the 3rd – 6th graders sang together and it was always harder to get the 6th grad boys to do any movements because they were so concerned about looking cool. Liked the post and your writing. thanks.

I love Hillsong’s music, but I haven’t ever heard Hillsong Kids!
I miss those days where they would just dance and just…be…with abandon not worrying if it looks funny or if other people were watching and what they were thinking. I know it’s a part of growing up, but it’s hard when that is lost. –Lisa
