Five Minute Friday – Visit

It’s Five Minute Friday!  My favorite writing time of the week.

Last time the word was ENCOURAGEMENT.  I didn’t know it at the time, but the word set the theme for my entire weekend.  I love it when God whispers to me.

Today’s writing prompt is… VISIT.

Five Minute Friday

If you were to drop in for a visit today you’d see our daily life strewn about the place.

There’s gallon jugs of water on the kitchen counter.

(Would you like something to drink?  We can’t stand the taste of tap water, but I’d be happy to pour you some in a clean glass.  I think we’ve still got ice.  Or I can point you to the the Keurig.  Your choice.)

There’s backpacks by the front door.

(Just kick those shoes out of your way if you want.  But watch the backpack.  It’s heavy.  My oldest carries a half dozen books to read with him at all times.)

There’s a pile of jackets and hats and scarves.

(If you see a hat you like, please take it.  I have this thing about crocheting hats.  Seriously.  If you like that pink one take it with you.  I think there’s a scarf to match somewhere in the pile.)

There are dust bunnies.

(I never realized just how many more there would be when we switched away from carpet.  Yikes.  I can’t quite manage sweeping or vacuuming yet, so I have just have to watch them multiply.  What’s that?  Um…  the knee surgery was 12 weeks ago this week.)

There are two comfy chairs over in the corner.

(Just push the cat away.  She’s used to it.  Put your feet up and get comfy, I’m so glad you’re here.)

Even just a short year ago, I would have been bustling about, trying to hide our daily mess.  I would have fluttered and fussed until you left.    Remember your last visit?  The one where I cleaned the kitchen the whole time you were here?

What changed?  I’m not sure.  I just know that these days, I look forward to your visits.

I have a passion for encouraging weary worn out mothers to find joy in everyday motherhood and peace in unlikely places. I have two elementary school boys, one nerdy husband, and two cats. I have a strange fascination for bad puns, the color pink, socks, and books. I worry about running out of toilet paper, wine, and chocolate.. I serve an amazing God. I live an ordinary life filled with wonder.

  1. You have to push a cat out of the way to sit on my couch too, but if you sit down ours will probably try to sit on your lap. I loved visiting your house through this five minute Friday. I hope you have a lovely weekend. 🙂

  2. Sounds like the promise to a nice homey visit. I hope you will be blessed with such a drop-in today! Thanks for living authentically.

  3. What a clever and unique way to write with this prompt! I’m always so impressed with these 5 minute Friday posts. I just can’t do it. I freeze. –Lisa Ps. You have to kick shoes and backpacks out of the way at my house, too!

  4. Love this. It’s *my* backpack you need to be careful of in my house, since it’s usually got my books and those of the kids. We go to the library a lot. And jugs of water on the counter, because the place we’re renting has a fridge with a filter, but in this cold it keeps freezing.

I’ve taken to telling my friends, only half joking, “I decided I’d rather see you today than clean.”

I really love your style here. It reminds me of a poem I once read, and now only half remember (how Grandpa Simpson is that?). It’s so inviting.
