Five Minute Friday – Reflect

It’s Five Minute Friday!  My favorite writing time of the week.

Last time, the word was FLY.

Today’s writing prompt is… REFLECT.

Five Minute Friday

Reflect? I don’t have time for that.

Ain’t nobody got time for that.

I’m too busy to reflect.  I’ve got too much to do.  It’s Christmas season and we lost a week and… (tap tap tap of the foot… come on people… move it.)

As we race out the door to yet another activity I’m annoyed by the rain.  It’s misting.  Not enough to need the windshield wipers but enough to make a mess of the streets and make it hard to see.  It’s dark.  It’s cold.  And I’m tired.

I am NOT in the mood to reflect.

I am NOT in the mood to sit through a two hour Christmas music program and listen to poorly performed songs about baby Jesus.

I’m fuming.  I’m regretting that I left my to-do list at home.  If I’d remembered my notebook I could AT LEAST have been productive during the program.

(I wonder if they have wifi…)

I’m so busy being busy that I don’t even notice that the neighborhood has been transformed with Christmas lights.

Not until I hear my kids start to squeal with delight.

Look mommy.  It’s beautiful.

Look mommy look! It’s magic!

At a stop light I glance around just long enough to realize that the mist in the air has made all the Christmas lights even more sparkly than normal.

I turn to glance at my children, prepared to launch into a scientific explanation about how the water is refracting the lights.

And then I see it.

The reflection of all those lights in their eyes.

I see the joy and the wonder that is Christmas.

The words catch in my throat and the tears threaten to escape my eyes.  I had almost missed this.  I almost missed the chance to see the world made new and sparkly.  I choke as I reply

Yes honey, it really IS magical.

And just for that moment, it was.

STOP.

    • Our Christmas program was last night. My attitude really stank about it. Honestly, I was thinking of skipping it. That’s HORRIBLE. If my stress level is that high over Christmas decorations then we just need to scale way back and do less.

In the end, the program was actually really good. I was blessed by the music and the Christmas spirit. It was so sweet. I almost missed all that because of my own silliness.

  3. I had nearly this same experience yesterday. As we drove into our neighborhood yesterday we had our first chance to see decorations on. “A Christmas Wonderland” were the words my little guy picked. He nailed it!

  4. I totally get what you mean about not having time to reflect on anything. Yet, we should take the time to do it. This is well said. (As always.)

    • I have such a hard time making myself sit still and be quiet this time of year. There’s always something that demands my attention. I’m thankful that God helps me remember to “be still and know that He is God” when I need it the most.
