Five Minute Friday – Fly

It’s Five Minute Friday!  My favorite writing time of the week.

Last week, the word was TREE.

Today’s writing prompt is… FLY.

Five Minute Friday

My husband and kids aren’t even down the sidewalk yet, but already my day has been full.  By the time they all leave for school and work,  my head is spinning from the noise and motion.

It starts each morning with the noise of my husband’s alarm clock.  Within seconds, I hear the sound of my youngest son’s feet hit the floor and the slap slap slap as he FLIES down the hallway to our room.

It keeps going as one by one we tumble down the stairs and into the kitchen.

Breakfast. Lunches. Backpacks. Computers. Briefcases. Schedules. Papers. Prayers. Spelling words. Cats. Dishes. Turtles. Teeth. Trash.

Through it all, we talk. The words FLY across the kitchen in an endless stream.

At the end, they all FLY out the door, leaving me alone in a silent house.

My husband and kids are still visible through the window now, but my fingers begin to FLY across the keyboard.  By the time they all get to work and to school my five minutes will be long gone.

Already, my thoughts begin to FLY onwards to the next thing (laundry) and the next (school parties today for Thanksgiving) and the one beyond (the forecast calls for rain all weekend).

On a busy Friday morning filled with chaos, there was just enough time for THIS.

Between flights, there was time…

… time I took to do something just for me.

… time to keep a promise to myself to always write.

… time I made to nurture my soul on the words of others.

… time to think, to breathe, to sit and drink in the silence of my morning.

… time to just BE, to exist apart from my endless to-do list.

… time for me to remember that my spirit can FLY.

I have a passion for encouraging weary worn out mothers to find joy in everyday motherhood and peace in unlikely places. I have two elementary school boys, one nerdy husband, and two cats. I have a strange fascination for bad puns, the color pink, socks, and books. I worry about running out of toilet paper, wine, and chocolate.. I serve an amazing God. I live an ordinary life filled with wonder.

  1. Hello from the FMF link-up! It is so important to remember to take time for yourself in our busy rushed schedules. Currently I stay at home with a 2 year old and an almost 5 month old. It seems as moms we never get enough sleep, enough rest, enough time to just be; so it is important to make it a priority. 🙂 I’m glad to see you did just that this morning!

How kind of our Savior, even in the midst of our busiest moments and life-days, to give us peace in the midst of “chaos” and joy in the midst of craziness. 🙂

  3. My favorite part of the day is when I’ve poured myself a cup of coffee and I sit down to just “be” for a few minutes before getting to my to-do list. I agree with you, this is so important before you fly through the business of the day!

  4. I love Isaiah 40:31! Thank you for reminding me of that verse. I love taking time during busy days to let my spirit fly by writing. In some of my blog posts I record their flights, so that I will always remember their victories and the journey of motherhood. Sometimes, my post are just collections of thoughts that have been rolling around my head and my heart. Thank you for sharing. I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

    • I love the verse, but I always have to google to find it. One of these days I’ll get it memorized.

Half of what I start to write for a blog post never sees the light of day (or if it does, it’s months later). Sometimes I just write… I let the words spill out until God is done with me. It’s soooo sweet when that happens. Even if no one else ever read the words.
