Happy First Day of School to Me!

It’s the first day of school for my family.

I remember the first few years that the house would empty for the first day of school.  The first year or two, it was a shock.  I honestly struggled to figure out what to DO with myself.

The very first year I had both kids in preschool, drop off was at 9am.  By 10:30 I had gotten a much needed haircut and finished grocery shopping in peace.  The groceries were put away, dinner was in the crockpot.  I felt so…. lost.

Last year, I wrote a snark laden post on what to do for the first day of school.  In honesty, it was directed at my own former self.

10 ideas for how to enjoy back to school with thishappymom.com

At the very end of the post, I said

The first day of school should be yours to enjoy.

I meant it.

As I’ve gotten more practice as this first day of school thing I’ve gotten better.  First days are kind of like Christmas afternoon.  Everything that was on your to do list yesterday is either done or irrelevant.  And you know there’s a new huge list that starts tomorrow when there are sales to shop, stuff to return, diets to start, and decorations to un-decorate.

But for now… for just this tiny slice of time… ah….

Don’t miss it.  Don’t skip this “ah” day.

"Ah" days start when you walk back into the house after waving goodbye. You pour a cup of coffee, sit down in your favorite spot, put your feet up, and say "ah...." It's a day of catching your breath. A pause before the next push. Don't ever skip the "ah" day.

Y’all, I have a to-do list that is a mile long.  My house is a disaster of epic proportions.  I’ll fill you in on the details later but I’ve been on housecleaning strike.  I think I won, but now I have to clean up my mess.

I have so much stuff to catch up on.  If I were to start writing it all down it would fill a notebook.

But for today…

…today is for me to enjoy.

At the end of my summer of dry, it’s a day for drinking.

No!  Not like that.  Not wine (or scotch).   I’m well hydrated in that department.  I’m happy drinking lots of water.

No.  It’s a day for drinking in the silence.  It’s a day for sipping from scripture.  It’s a day for immersing myself in a day of prayer.

And it feels good.

Tomorrow will be soon enough for errands.

Friday will be soon enough to make that massive list.

And next Monday…. well, watch out Mt Washmore, I’ve got my eye on you.  You’re going down….!

Today is a day for “ah”

I’m going to enjoy it.  I hope you do too!

ps – my boys are getting bigger!  gogo is so proud of his all white shoes.

this is 4th and 2nd grade.

    • Ah days are cheaper too! 🙂

My boys are looking WAY too grown up these days. There’s not a trace of little boy left in either one of them. Sigh.

The worst part of their first day was that it was too hot at recess (close to 100) and a leaky water bottle.

  2. Happy first day of school, Susan! I love the idea of “ah days” even if it isn’t the first day of school! It feels great to take a day to catch up mentally and put the to-do lists way.

  4. First day of school is fantastic for everyone. For the kids, most are at least excited for the first day since there will almost never be work, and the parents finally get a break from summer break! Great blog post, remember to enjoy every minute though, “ah” or not, time flies by so quickly.

  5. As a stay at home father I am well versed in the first day of school relaxation. After a long summer playing with the kids, driving them all over the place and attending to their every need, I can say that I love the first day of the school year. This ‘Ah’ day is what I look forward to.

Being a parent is never easy, and it gets even harder when you can’t afford all the back-to-school gear and supplies the kids need. My blog has some ideas to help parents. http://cashadvance.nationalcashcredit.com/2014/07-back-to-school-is-almost-hereprepare.html
