Labor Day Weekend Summer Recipe Roundup

It’s Labor Day weekend!  The official last weekend of summer grilling and cookouts.   In honor of the weekend of summer cooking, I’m rounding up my favorite summer recipe posts from the past two years.

Enjoy. [Read more…]

Five Minute Friday – Worship

It’s Five Minute Friday, hosted by Lisa-Jo Baker at The Gypsy Mama.  Five minutes of free writing flash mob goodness.

If you aren’t familiar, the rules are simple.  Lisa-Jo Baker gives a single word writing prompt every Friday.   Each of us have five minutes to write and post.  No editing, no second guessing, no fancy stuff.  Just plain writing – straight from the heart. (click HERE for the official rules and details).  Then we go visit other participants and shower them with comment love.

Last week, the word was LAST.

This week, the word is WORSHIP.  The whole Five MInute Party is on a road trip over at (in)courage.  If you haven’t ever checked them out, be sure and visit!

Summer Truths – One last time

I can’t bid a farewell to summer without pausing to look back at what I’ve learned over the past few months.

Oh, who am I kidding.

Sprinkled throughout my posts this summer were a nice sprinkling of “summer truths.”  I’ve jotted down several pages of them in my writer’s notebook too.  I thought it would be fun to round them up and maybe laugh at them.

I started with truth #100.  No reason.

A Farewell to Summer – At least in my mind

In honor of Labor Day and the traditional end of summer, this week I’m bidding a (not so fond) farewell to summer.  After a week of back to school, I figure I might as well.

Maybe next week I’ll talk about apples.  No worries, I won’t suddenly share a week of apple crafts and decor ideas and recipes.  I’m still not that kind of a blog.  (I may make fun of a few… how fun would that me?  Hmmm…  I AM feeling a tad bit snarky…)

It’s still hot.  It’s hot AND humid.  It shouldn’t be legal for it to be over 95 degrees AND humid.  Walking outside feels like I’m hanging out in a sauna.  For those who live on the Gulf Coast, we know we have at least another month of this weather.  Maybe more.

Summer lingers long after it has worn out it’s welcome. [Read more…]

A look back on Summer Boredom

My most popular post this summer has been 281 Ideas to Beat Summer Boredom.

281 summer boredom busters

>>> FREE DOWNLOAD <<<

I’ve received comments thanking me for an amazing list.

For those readers, thank you.  I love your feedback.  I hope the list helped you when you needed it most.  I figure it  kept a low level of fun going all summer long. Either that or you had a great weapon to use when your kids got whiney and rejected every single suggestion you could come up with.

I’ve received comments telling me it was a list of the most lame and boring ideas that could ever have been compiled.

For those readers… yep. You’re right.  It was a list of  everyday stuff.  There wasn’t a single high budget or high effort idea on the list.  If you were looking for a list of ways to amaze your kids with cool stuff like day trips to water parks, road trips to the museum of french fries, and Pinterest worthy crafts then you were disappointed.  It wasn’t intended to be that kind of list.  I never pretended otherwise.

But I didn’t get any feedback on whether or not the list actually worked.

If you remember, I started the summer with a simple premise.  My kids need to be bored. [Read more…]

MOMtor Monday – Cookie Dough and Self Control

It’s MOMtor Monday and I’m over at Mothering from Scratch with a guest post.

I’ve adored their series on the fruits of the spirit this summer.  I love fresh fruit in the summer time, and their series really satisfied!

Because I’m a regular contributor to Mothering from Scratch (and because they actually plan their posts out weeks in advance) I actually had this writing assignment since last May.

For three months, I’ve been staring at “self control” as a writing topic.

When I first got it, I immediately told my husband.   His response was not exactly the loving and supportive one that I was looking for! [Read more…]

Back To School Treasury, Miscellany, Compendium…

Think of it as the back to school gallimaufry even.

Gallimaufry – (n) a confused jumble or medley of things

Why yes, in honor of back to school season I did use the thesaurus (or at least the website).  I certainly don’t walk around the house using the word gallimaufry.

Although to be honest, I think the word may be readily applied to several areas of the house including the play room and the laundry room.

But this… this is a round up of all the back to school fun I’ve written over the past two years. [Read more…]

Last week, the word was SMALL.  I loved writing about small things and how managing the small things well leads to big victories.

This week, the word is LAST.

Car line Revisited

A year ago, I wrote a rather fun piece titled the 10 commandments of car line.

I think it’s one of my favorite posts of all times.  It was initially drafted on the back of an envelope while I was sitting in car line.  Given that at the time I drove a black car and was sitting in 100+ degree heat for over an hour, it was great therapy.

I should confess that I discovered Candy Crush several days later and spent the rest of the school year happily advancing levels while waiting in car line.

I must not be alone.

On Monday, The Orlando Sentinel featured an article titled SCHOOL CAR LINES DRIVE MANY PARENTS CRAZY, IT SEEMS.

I was quoted in the article.  Squeee.  I haven’t read all the links… yet.

I figured it was time to revisit the car line. [Read more…]

The post where I confess to being rebellious

I’ve never told you this before, but I tend to be a bit rebellious.

Not in big ways.  Not now (although I did when I was younger.  cough.  statute of limitations. cough cough. changed.)

On the outside, I’m a rule following by the books kind of gal.  I have to be – I expect my kids to obey me.  But that doesn’t change me on the inside.

I am secretly rebellious.

When I see a sign that says [Read more…]
