My Kids Make Me Laugh – Boredom

If my kids make me laugh about summer boredom, then there’s hope.

I KNOW I’m not alone.  All across America, kids are whining “I’m bored” by 10am.  By noon, a whole lot of us moms are “done.”  To be honest, humor is one of the biggest ways I cope.

I hope it works for you too.

By the way, this is the time of year that I’m totally jealous of my homeschooling friends.  Many of them are starting school early.  The days now will will be exchanged for a random week off when the weather if fabulous and the parks are deserted.

So far, today has gone a little something like this:

Thankful Thoughts – Friendship

I’ve spent some time this afternoon having some thankful thoughts about friendship.

(ok, first i spent some time napping. then pinteresting, THEN thinking.)

It started as we walked into church (late) today.  Someone was sharing scripture.   Psalm 139 to be exact. [Read more…]

Summer Saturday – Just like when I was little

It’s a summer Saturday.

As I write this, my kids are watching Woody Woodpecker.  My husband is cutting the grass.  I’ve cooked a hot breakfast.  Once the yard is done, we have an afternoon of family fun planned.

Just like when I was a kid.

Without realizing it, our family found that old time routine of yard cutting and chores on Saturday morning before playing all afternoon.

And it just feels… right.

Until a few weeks ago, we had a yard guy that came and cut the grass.  Between a desire to do a little budget cutting and a need to teach our kids some responsibility, we fired the yard guy.   We decided it was time to teach our boys to cut the grass and do yard chores.

Suddenly, everything just fit.

104 days of summer vacation…

… and school comes along just to end it.

We started our summer vacation sooner than just about anyone I know.  We got out May 24th.  So I may be a little further along in the summer vacation stages than you are.

(by the way, I just calculated… there are only 81 days in our summer vacation)

But I have this theory about summer vacation.  I think ALL of us go through the same stages of enjoyment, tolerance, resignation,  and eagerness.

(there are only 31 days left before our 1st day of school.  that’s only a MONTH!  we go back earlier than anyone i know, so your numbers may not be so exciting.)

At the start of the summer, we are all excited about the lack of schedule and the freedom to sleep late.  Enjoyment is high.  Our kids are easily entertained, the house is still clean, and we’re all relaxed and happy.

(but really, it’s more like 21 weekdays.  weekends don’t count.)

dont look in the laundry roomAfter a few weeks, the excitement wears off.  The lack of routine has turned our home upside down.  The kids stay up late and we stay up later.  We’d all sleep in except that SOMEONE still has to go to work.  We won’t mention the laundry pile.  Just don’t open the laundry room door please.  Suddenly, activities and outings seem like a great idea.  It will help everyone to get out of the house.  Summer vacation is tolerable, but no longer exciting. True Confessions: I invited another man…

I’ve made several other true confessions on my blog before this one.

Like… that I’m afraid of my pressure cooker.   And… that famous red high heeled shoe incident.  And even… my worst date ever.

Today I’d like to confess to sending a text to another man with (gasp) my hotel room number.

True Confession

I’ve deleted all evidence, but two years ago, some time this month, I sent a text to “K” that read

I’m in the Cozy Motel in room 212.  Come on up as soon as you can.  I need you! [Read more…]

My Kids Make Me Laugh – GoGo’s World

My kids make me laugh all the time.  Recently, my husband and I were both cracking up at our youngest son.

Apparently, he lives in a different world than the rest of us.  He’s going into second grade this fall, so you have to take what he says with more than a grain of salt.

But even with that… he’s just… funny.

His record is three laughs in less than five minutes.  On three entirely different topics.  My head was spinning!

An unexpected blessing

Did you ever have a chore that turned out to be an unexpected blessing?

I love it when that happens.

I don’t know why, but it just seems like a gift from God – one that’s all gift wrapped in a pretty package and just waiting for me to open it up.  That’s particularly true when it’s a chore I’ve been procrastinating.

My unexpected blessing was… [Read more…]
