Five Minute Friday – Beautiful

It’s Five Minute Friday, hosted by Lisa-Jo Baker at The Gypsy Mama.  Five minutes of free writing flash mob goodness.

If you aren’t familiar, the rules are simple.  Lisa-Jo Baker gives a single word writing prompt every Friday.   Each of us have five minutes to write and post.  No editing, no second guessing, no fancy stuff.  Just plain writing – straight from the heart. (click HERE for the official rules and details).  Then we go visit other participants and shower them with comment love.

Two weeks ago, the words were IN BETWEEN

This week, the word is BEAUTIFUL.

Rarely does that word spring to mind when I look in the mirror.

I’m more likely to see the stray gray hairs, the blemishes on my face, the beginnings of wrinkles around my eyes…

I look in the mirror and see the signs of my life.

I see the cumulative impact of all the sleepless nights.  But I rarely remember how beautiful motherhood is.

I see the little laugh lines around my mouth.  But I rarely remember how beautiful my husband thinks the sound of my laughter is.

I see how my hair isn’t nearly fabulous as it was when I was 20.  But I rarely remember how beautiful wisdom is.

I see the stained t-shirt.  My kids see the evidence of a beautiful memory.

I see the messy floor.  My kids see the beautiful cake they helped make.

I see the pile of tools my husband left on the floor.  I miss appreciating the beautiful job he did tiling the shower wall.

My life is beautiful.

I wish I saw it more often.

my life is beautiful

I have a passion for encouraging weary worn out mothers to find joy in everyday motherhood and peace in unlikely places. I have two elementary school boys, one nerdy husband, and two cats. I have a strange fascination for bad puns, the color pink, socks, and books. I worry about running out of toilet paper, wine, and chocolate.. I serve an amazing God. I live an ordinary life filled with wonder.

  1. Hi Susan! I am coming to you from FMF.

I think just about everyone had no trouble knowing what beauty is, but lots of trouble applying it to themselves. So easy to see the cruddy stuff about us, and not the ‘beauty’.

It was a good exercise to recognize that we are beautiful! And you are 🙂

    Nice to ‘meet’ you!

Yes, this is so true. This is a beautiful post. I think people often forget to remember that life is beautiful because they are caught up with the small stuff. So, as they say, don’t sweat the small stuff!
