Thankful Thoughts – Minecraft

My kids want to share some thankful thoughts about Minecraft.  Since it’s summer, I’m inclined to let them.

I figure this qualifies as a writing assignment.  That means my kids aren’t just sitting around turning into brainless lumps… right?

Minecraft is a video game that has two basic modes.  In creative mode, you build stuff out of virtual blocks.  In survival mode, you fight off the monsters and survive by mining things and crafting them into items you need – like building blocks, better mining tools, and monster fighting equipment.  The graphics are a throw-back to the original Nintendo 8 bit system, so the monsters are generally just a couple of black blocks stacked on top of each other.

Yes…. I’ve written about Minecraft before.

The Ouch Game

My boys have been playing “The Ouch Game” since they were both in diapers.

We did NOT teach it to them.  Apparently, it just comes with being a boy.

Not only did my husband recognize the game from his own boyhood, he could actually explain the rules to me.  As the boys have gotten older, hubby sometimes joins in the game.

Five Minute Friday – In Between

It’s Five Minute Friday, hosted by Lisa-Jo Baker at The Gypsy Mama.  Five minutes of free writing flash mob goodness.

If you aren’t familiar, the rules are simple.  Lisa-Jo Baker gives a single word writing prompt every Friday.   Each of us have five minutes to write and post.  No editing, no second guessing, no fancy stuff.  Just plain writing – straight from the heart. (click HERE for the official rules and details).  Then we go visit other participants and shower them with comment love.

Two weeks ago, the word was LISTEN

Last week, I had issues.

This week, the words are IN BETWEEN and I bawled like a baby as I wrote this.  Sorry.

How I taught my kids to behave in the grocery store

Yes it’s true – my kids used to be grocery store beggers…. and fighters… and worst of all whiners.

They don’t do that any more.  They still don’t love grocery shopping, and I do my best to avoid taking them with me.  But when they do go, one of them pushes the cart while the other one “helps” me.

I’ve even gotten complements on how well they behave.

It didn’t used to be this way, trust me.

The Confession

I used to be one of those super-couponers.  I could load my cart to the brim and watch the total drop from $700 to $50. [Read more…]

Jelly Beans and Margaritas

Remember when I told you that my son was obsessed with getting me to drink a Margarita?

(i shudder to think how this will manifest when he is dating)

The treat of the week was a gallon container of gourmet jelly beans.  The obsession continues.

MOMtor Monday – Cookies and Momma Love

It’s my MOMtor Monday and I’m thrilled about it.

First, I always love guesting at Mothering From Scratch and interacting with their awesome community of ladies.

Second, This is the start of an amazing series they are doing called “A Fruity Look at Mothering.”  I can’t wait to see what they will share this summer.

Today I’m sharing a post titled HOW MOMMA LOVE MADE ME LOSE MY COOKIES.

Go read it.  I’ll be back tomorrow with a story of how my kids make me laugh.

Thankful Thoughts – Embracing Summer

This week’s thankful thoughts are about embracing summer, but they’re also about nothing.

Literally.

An entire week of nothing.

With the exception of a single Facebook event, my entire week is blissfully schedule free.  It is the first week I’ve had in 11 months where there is literally nothing written on my calendar.

We may have started summer vacation long before you did, but I feel like we’re just now getting to the good part.  By now, you may have forgotten how much you were looking forward to summer break.  You may be counting down the days until school begins.

As for me, I’m just now embracing summer.

I haven’t always embraced summer. [Read more…]

A no excuses kind of post

When I started blogging, I made a promise to myself that I would never write one of those “I would have posted except…” posts.  I promised myself there would be no excuses.

And even though I’ve missed posting twice this week, there will be… no excuses.

Now that I’ve been home from vacation a week, you would think things would be back to normal.  I had certainly planned for them to be.   By now I had every intention of being caught up on the laundry, throwing a 31 party, cleaning my bathrooms, and generally being caught up with the universe.

It hasn’t exactly been that kind of week.

Even without the double whammy of VBS and writing camp, it wouldn’t have been that kind of week.

It’s been the OTHER kind of week. [Read more…]

Hamburger shapes matter

There is a reason that hamburgers have their shape.  Hamburger shapes matter.  A lot.

I don’t know what all was going through the mind of the person who invented hamburgers, but I’m pretty sure there were a few trial and error attempts along the way.  There’s no other reason why they ended up in an easily cooked form that fits perfectly between two slabs of bread.. all without resembling anything unfortunate.

Yesterday, I decided to mess with that burger shape.  I paid a price.

My Kids Make Me Laugh – Guns

OK, before you get all huffy and political and judgmental about guns, you really need to hear the whole story.  By the end, I think you’ll agree that my kids make me laugh about guns.

My husband and I have a mixed marriage.  I come from a gun free, non-hunting family.  My husband… doesn’t.

So when our sons were born, there was some good natured speculation about what our parenting choices would be.  When a relative inadvertently gave our children a gift that included a gun as part of a dress-up kit, family members held their breaths to see what my reaction would be.

(i gently removed the gun from the play set and kept on going.  no big deal.)

<reminder – go enter my giveaway, you can earn entries each day>

Honestly, I tried to raise my boys without guns.  I gave it my best… shot. [Read more…]
