Vacation Planning – 5 things you never think of

The weird stuff that ends up on my to do list when I’m vacation planning is enough to make me want to just go with a staycation instead.

Some of it is my fault, a few I can trace back to my mother, and the rest… those are all from my husband.  But the end result is that I end up with a to-do list that is crammed full of last minute stuff that quite frankly, drives me crazy.

Here’s my top ten list of crazy stuff on my to-do list this week.  Our flight is Saturday and I’m not sure I can get it all done.  I never do. Somehow, we always manage to survive.

Just how many socks are enough?

Do you ever get the feeling you are drowning in laundry?  (You know how I feel about laundry, right?)  My latest obsession is with socks.

Someone in my family is a sock hoarder.  He’s been socking them away for years.

I LOATHE sorting socks – specifically men’s socks.

The other day, I realized my husband’s socks had gotten completely out of control.  I looked at him in all seriousness and asked him “just how many socks are enough for you!?”

For contrast, I have about two dozen pair of socks in total.  I have winter wool socks, work out socks, and dressy black socks.  That’s it.  When my socks outgrow my sock drawer, I throw some away.   I’ve been handling it that way for years and I’ve NEVER run out of socks.

My husband owns…. (drumroll please)  over 60 pairs of socks. [Read more…]

My kids make me laugh: Cats and Dogs

My kids make me laugh all the time.  The other day, we were driving home from school and got to talking about cats and dogs.  I can’t believe where the conversation took us.

It started simply enough.  I asked them one of those classic cartoon questions.

Me:  When you watch Tom and Jerry do you root for the cat or the mouse? [Read more…]

MOMtor Monday – Staycations

It’s my MOMtor Monday today, so I’m guest posting over at Mothering From Scratch.

Today’s post is all about Staycations.  As a staycation veteran, I was only too happy to share what makes a great staycation.  I even dished about the one that wasn’t so good.

thankful thoughts – hold me momma

Thankful thoughts was drafted on my phone today – in the dark. It’s at the request of my son.

I had a different post drafted, but this one seems more important. I must capture this moment and trap it on the page before it flies away. [Read more…]

Memorial Day – I was a good mom that day

Way back when I was trying to raise two toddlers and run a food blog, I managed to capture a favorite Memorial Day weekend memory on film.

I was working to get my kids fed, plate food for a festive Memorial Day themed post, and keep my kids from destroying the house.  While I was in the house getting all fancy with dinner (this was the preschool plate, the adult food was fancier) ...

patriotic fruit salad

…I looked up to see this…

they will find the sprinklers

…Watty and GoGo were both yelling “take a picture of me momeeeeeee!”

So, I did.

At the time, I was particularly proud of the red white and blue fruit salad for Memorial Day.   I felt like super mom because I’d actually managed to put them in their flag t-shirts for the day.

Looking back, I’m not impressed with the t-shirts.  I’m not impressed with the fancy food photos.  My kids didn’t even notice that their fruit plate of the day was red white and blue.

Instead, I’m thankful I stopped to take photos of my kids.  I’m thankful I put the camera down and ran around in the sprinklers with my kids.  I’m thankful that there was no yelling about my kids being dripping wet just before dinner.  I’m thankful I remember their squeals of delight as we raced in the water.  I’m thankful I remember the smile on my husband’s face when he saw us.

I look back at those photos and think “I was a good mom right then” and that feels good.

i was a good mom that day

Happy Memorial Day mommas.

If I could wish one thing for you this weekend, it would be this:

Put down the camera.  Walk away from Pinterest.  Create a “I was a good mom right then” moment that you will remember forever.

Four years from now, I wish for you to look back on this weekend and smile.  I wish for you to be thankful.  I wish for the memories to be about more than flag t-shirts and patriotic fruit salad.

Portrait of a Nine Year Old Boy

Happy Birthday to Watty!  My oldest son turns NINE today.  Where did the time go?

I can’t believe that nine years ago, I looked like this!

(sigh. once i showed the blue eye shadow love’s baby soft photo i’ve lost all control.)

Watty is an amazing kid.

What does a nine year old boy look like?  I’ve painted a portrait of him in words.

281 ideas to beat summer boredom

You know how I feel about summer boredom.  I truly believe that my kids NEED to be bored.

I work hard to make sure they get bored.  I turn off the television.  I ban the electronics.  I keep them at home without direction.

(yes. i’m crazy)

I know that they normally pass through the bored phase (the time where they are annoying and whiny) and into creative play.  For the most part, they move past “I’m bored” and right into “mom, look at this” without too much effort.

But sometimes…. sometimes they need a nudge.

Sometimes, they need a little help.  Realistically, if my kids are looking to me for an idea of how to appropriately spend their time, I’m probably not in good shape to come up with a really good idea.  By that point, I’m normally so frazzled I’m doing good to remember my name.

But I can at least remember to look at a list.

(you can download this list in PDF form here.  it’s formatted to be able to cut these into strips.)
