Tax Day

happy tax dayToday is tax day.  And I have a little confession to make.  Mine aren’t done yet.

(oh who am i kidding! they aren’t even started.)

I do this to myself every year.  And I don’t know why.  I’ve never actually MISSED filing our taxes on time, but I have been the last person at the post office for the night.

You’d think I’d learn.

Top 10 Benefits for Delaying My Taxes?

top ten tax benefits1.  My house is clean.  Every time I’ve sat down over the past few weeks to try to do taxes, I’ve found other stuff that seemed more important.  Like laundry, the dishes, and reorganizing the china.

2.  Built-in Excuse for Missing Yucky Stuff.  If you invited my kids to a birthday party in the past month, we didn’t make it.  In theory, I was doing taxes during that time.  The same goes for that invitation to an all night nail polish party.

3.  I win!  Those of us that put our taxes off until the last minute know it’s a competition.  As long as you don’t start your taxes until THE day and get them turned in on time, you’re competing right along side me.  This is my 29th year in a row to pull this stunt.  That has to be a record.

4.  Pizza for dinner.  It’s a given.  There will be no other work done in my home today.  All domestic efforts will cease.

5.  No re-dos.  I always hear of these people who have their taxes done in January that then have to resubmit because the forms weren’t finalized.  I’ve never had that happen to me!

6.  I’m upholding tradition.  Just ask my dad.

7.  Blogging Fodder.  I’ll be honest, this is a new benefit for me.  But I figure I can squeeze a few day’s worth of blog posts out of my Tax Day insanity.  I may have to wait a year to share them, but that’s ok.  Pre-written posts are like (tax free) money in the bank baby!

8.  A sense of community.  It gives me comfort to know I’m not alone.  Across America, there are countless others who are sitting at their computers and doing taxes at the same time I am.  It’s a huge Tax Party.  When I’m done, I can get a virtual high-five from someone who understands.

9.  No one hates me.  If you finished and filed your taxes months ago, I have a secret for you.  The rest of us secretly hate you.  When you proudly announce that you’re done with your taxes, we want to punch you in the face (or at least think ugly thoughts about you).  We think you’re the adult equivalent of the over-eager kid sitting on the front row in Elementary school – the one who always raised his hand.

10.  I get new toys.  My husband LOATHES my yearly ritual (almost as much as I loathe the people who do their taxes early).  He would do anything to make me stop this nonsense.  He doesn’t question any office supply purchases during tax season.   I love office supplies.

Ok, I’ve got to go.  I really can’t put my taxes off much longer.  I have two full sets to do by the time my kids get out of school.

  1. {Melinda} Oh, my goodness, this is too funny. I totally get this. My tax returns are being extended my accountant. If I can’t get my kids to school on time in the morning, why should the IRS think they’ll get a year-long accounting of my activities on time? 🙂

    • I do my own taxes, but I’m seriously re-considering my decision. But for this year…. one down and one to go. First return took less than 3 hours. Now for that business return….

  2. I always get mine done early – but not this year. I just didn’t want to. It was also hard to find any time where I could work on them without interruption. But I got them done Saturday and in the mail Saturday. Yeah!

I’m not sure I could wait until tax day to do it. I like a little stress but not that much.

    • There was a year when I had to drive to the last open post office in Houston at 11pm. THAT was stressful.

When I lived in Austin, I lived a mile away from the big IRS office there. I’d do my taxes and just drive them over to the IRS office. After 5, the employees would stand out with a big cardboard box and let you just toss your envelope in. They always handed out candy and made a party of it.

Mine are all done now. I managed to get them done BEFORE picking the kids up from school. That’s somewhat early for me… not sure what to do the rest of the day. 🙂

  4. It seems like tax season is the perfect season for procrastination. Once again we’re a day away from tax day and have you decided to procrastinate again?? I was able to do mine this weekend, but I still consider that pretty late. I end up using TurboTax and it works out alright. But, I don’t run my own business either, so that must be a pain to file for!

  5. I think pay tax as soon as possible, because it is a type of burden that I am to pay the tax etc . But O.K. Nice blog keep it up.

  6. Happy Tax Day!
