Cow Hunting

cow huntingWhen Watty and GoGo were little, they wanted to go Cow Hunting.  It was a classic case of my kids saying something completely out of left field that I was totally unprepared for.

Kind of like that talk about S-E-X that happened when my kids were in the backseat of the car.

Sometimes, I really do wish I could press a “pause button” on my kids while I figure out an intelligent way to respond to their questions.

Watty:  Mommy, when can Daddy take us cow hunting?

GoGo:  Yeah!  Cow hunting.

Me: WHAT???

GoGo starts to make mooing cow noises and Watty is pretending to shoot his brother.  They are running around the room with Moo Moo Bang Bang noises. [Read more…]

It’s almost February – Got Goal?

Got Goal?Got Goal? It’s almost February, and I’m in the process of planning out my goals for next month.

Generally speaking, I achieve between 5 and 7 of my ten goals each month.  That’s WAY better than I’d do without any goals, so I figure I’m ahead.

(i know i didn’t get all my january goals met, the remodel isn’t done.  so i can’t put the house in order from the painter.  which means i can’t invite someone over for dinner.  and i can’t implement that meal plan i want to try until the painter is out of the kitchen.  ugh!)

And I’m inviting you to join me.

Got Goal? [Read more…]

My Kids Make Me Laugh – Donuts

my kids make me laughMy kids make me laugh.  Even when I’m in a funk or a writing haze.  Sunday, they were cracking me up about donuts.

My husband and children seem to think donuts on Sunday morning are non-negotable.  I’m not even sure my kids think it’s legal to GO to church without eating a donut first. [Read more…]

Sock It To Me

Sock It To MeWhen I was growing up, my brother’s absolute favorite dessert was something called Sock It To Me Cake.

If you don’t remember, it’s a bundt cake that starts with a yellow cake mix and and adds sour cream and a cinnamon sugar swirl.  The link takes you to the official recipe, but there are tons of variations.  Ask your grandma for her version, it will make her smile.

(if you’ve never had one, consider this a perfect excuse to go off your diet and try a slice.  it’s pretty yummy. since the cake has sour cream in it, you could even argue it’s a great breakfast food.  or not.)

Hmm, now that I think of it, I think he might disagree about Sock It To Me Cake being his absolute favorite.  He loved strawberry shortcake and Mississippi Mud cake too.  But it was in his top five desserts for sure. [Read more…]

My Kids Make Me Laugh – Socks

My Kids Make Me LaughMy kids make me laugh, and it’s now officially “sock week” at ThisHappyMom.com.

It’s a spontaneous sock week, but I can’t help myself.  Given how many posts I wrote about eggs, this shouldn’t come as a big shock.  You guys know how I am, right?

Yes, my kids made me laugh about socks this week.

I sent GoGo back upstairs to get some socks and he came down grumbling. [Read more…]

About those shoes and socks

socksI’m a nut about my kids wearing socks.  I also expect them to wear “real” shoes outside.  My kids find this frustrating.

The shoe thing is serious.  After seeing construction guys drop rusty nails and broken glass all over the yard, it’s non-negotiable.  I won’t let neighbor kids run around in our yard without “real” shoes either.

(that’s upset some adults, right up until i hand them the shrapnel from my yard.  i haven’t had much push-back since one of the kids got stitches in his foot.)

I expect real shoes. [Read more…]

Desperately Seeking Solitude

solitude with thishappymom.comYes, I’m writing again about solitude.

It’s part of an on again off again series.  I would write about it more often, but lately… there hasn’t been time for solitude.  I’ve had remodelers or kids in my house every single day since early December.

It all started with a Five Minute Friday post on QUIET.

Then we went on our camping trip last Thanksgiving.   I was thankful for the solitude.

It wasn’t until we were HOME from the camping trip that I realized I had stuff to say on the subject and wrote solitude part 3.

Then on December 13th, I wrote about how I wanted some camping solitude.   The painters had already been there for two weeks at that point.  The painters are STILL HERE.

And I’m once again seeking solitude. [Read more…]

Why I Can’t Watch That Game Show

Confessions - That Game ShowIn an effort to not blog about my remodel woes, I thought I’d share my story about why I can’t watch that game show any longer.

(if you want a remodel update:  i’m losing my bedroom nest today.  the plumber is going to be in my bathroom.  the good part of that is i’ll finally be getting a shower in my master bath.  bliss.)

Specifically, I can’t watch The Price is Right (TPIR).

It’s not that I refuse to watch it now that Bob Barker is gone.  I don’t object to the new beauties or any of the other attempts to modernize the show.  In some ways, I really miss it.  I have fond memories from my childhood of watching the show on sick days.

But I can’t watch it.

(warning – it’s a nursing story.  look away if you need to.)

I blame GoGo. [Read more…]
