Five Minute Friday – Stay

five minute fridayFive Minute Friday is my favorite post each week!

I normally start looking forward to the Five Minute Friday reveal as soon as I hit “post” on Thursday (and sometimes sooner!)

It’s the biggest free-writing flash-mob I’ve found on the internet and I seriously love it! I have fun writing, and I love the community that forms the flash mob.

The rules are simple:  one prompt, five minutes to write, no editing (and leave loving comments on other flash mob participants, ok?).  The flash-mob is the brain child of Lisa-Jo Baker and is hosted (hostessed?) at her Tales from a Gypsy Mama Blog.

Last week, I wrote about QUIET

This week, the topic is STAY

Five Minute Friday – STAY

No mommy, stay.

I close my eyes and take a silent breath, willing myself to dig deep and find patience.

It’s an hour past bedtime, and my little one is fighting.

Fighting sleep, fighting his fears, fighting his big boy bed, fighting to win the endurance race and end up (once again) in our bed.

Once again, I resume my post.  I sit on the floor, outside his room, only my feet visible in the pool of light created by his night light.

This is progress.  It has taken us six months for me to ease my way from hand holding to hall sitting.

Patience, never my strength, fills me in silent answer to my silent prayer.

So I stay.  I sit.  Long after the little one succumbs to sleep and begins to snore, long after my hind quarters are numb, I sit.  I linger in the hallway, treasuring in the moment.

The hallway.  Not quite his room, not quite my room.  I have met him in the middle.  I stayed.  I stayed faithful to my post and watched him, silently.  I guarded that last moment of babyhood.

Helplessly, the tears roll down my face as I watch him sleeping.  How is it he looks so much younger and more vulnerable in his sleep?

Time passes.

Last night, the little one put himself to bed.  He says my job of hallway sitting is over.  He laughs as he say it, skipping away down the hall.

And my heart screams “stay.”

That’s it for Five Minute Friday.

I have a passion for encouraging weary worn out mothers to find joy in everyday motherhood and peace in unlikely places. I have two elementary school boys, one nerdy husband, and two cats. I have a strange fascination for bad puns, the color pink, socks, and books. I worry about running out of toilet paper, wine, and chocolate.. I serve an amazing God. I live an ordinary life filled with wonder.
