Five Minute Friday – Voice

five minute fridayFive Minute Friday is my favorite post each week!

I normally start looking forward to the Five Minute Friday reveal as soon as I hit “post” on Thursday (and sometimes sooner!)

It’s the biggest free-writing flash-mob I’ve found on the internet and I seriously love it! I have fun writing, and I love the community that forms the flash mob.

The rules are simple:  one prompt, five minutes to write, no editing.  The flash-mob is the brain child of Lisa-Jo Baker and is hosted (hostessed?) at her Tales from a Gypsy Mama Blog.

Last week, I wrote about LOOK

This week, the topic is VOICE

Five Minute Friday – VOICE

On the playground I hear them.

(funny, that’s how i started last week)

I can hear their individual voices.  I can pick out my children’s laughter in a crowd.

When they were babies, I could pick out their cry in the nursery against the cries of other infants.

I knew them.  I know them better now.

I can tell which child is out of bed by the sound of their foot falls.

They hear me too.

They can pick my voice out on the playground against the background noise.

I can call their names and they look up, seeking until they find me.

They know my voice.

As babies, they would turn towards my voice, seeking me.

They knew me.  They know me better now.

A Question.

Recently, my kids asked

Mommy, how do you know when God is talking to you?

I had to stop and think.  How do I know?

Me:  On the playground, can you hear my voice above the other mommys?

Them:  Yes.

Me:  Why is that?

They had to think, but they were quick to come up with the right answer.

Them: Because I know your voice silly!

Then I asked them a harder question.

Me:  But sometimes, you don’t hear me right away.  Why?

(more head scratching, and a less confident answer.)

Them: Because I wasn’t listening for you?  Or maybe because I didn’t want to hear you?

I told them it’s the same way with God’s voice.  We hear Him because we know him.  The better we know Him, the easier it becomes to hear His voice in the crowd.

And sometimes, it’s hard to hear His voice because we’re not listening… or because we don’t want to hear Him.

That’s it for Five Minute Friday.

  1. That is an awesome analogy for explaining God’s voice to kids! I love it! I’m going to file it in my brain, since I work with 5&6 graders at church and they are always asking these questions…

I have to laugh too, b/c my family always says they know where I am by listening for my laugh…it’s loud… LOL! 🙂

Thanks for sharing! Have a great weekend!!

    • My family can find me by my sneeze or my laugh. My grandmother had this amazing whistle. I was at a huge two story mall and heard it as a teenager. I stood stock still, looking until I found her. Sure enough, she was there.

I have no idea where the analogy came from, so I have to believe God pushed the idea into my head. But my kids (1st and 3rd grade) got it immediately.

  2. Such a good post! Today I am fighting to get the negative voices out and keep the positive voices in…

  3. Well played, Mom. I can just see their quizzled faces as they pondered your answers. Brains stretching to understand. May my face be quizzled toward God until the moment He brings me home.
