(and i bet you wondered if i was skipping a day in the 31 days of joy in motherhood. nope. i’m late, but i’m not about to skip a day.)
But what exactly does that mean?
When I was in Junior High, I was taught that the letters J-O-Y represented the perfect priorities.
If you have your priorities right, you’ll find JOY.
The priorities (according to my Sunday School teacher) were
Jesus
Others
You
Pretty straight forward stuff.
There’s even some truth to that little lesson.
Telling teenagers to put themselves after others is a great lesson. I was totally self centered at the time.
But as a mom… sometimes I need to put myself and my needs first. (when i’m used up and worn out i’m worthless to my family.)
But this year, I heard what someone ELSE’S Sunday School teacher had taught HER about joy.
If you have your relationships right you’ll find JOY.
The J is still for Jesus. The Y is still for You.
The O is a big zero.
It’s supposed to represent that there is NOTHING in the way of the relationship between you and God.
Pretty straight forward.
I can buy into that one too.
They both are right.
I don’t think I need to pick one or the other. Both ways of looking at it are true.
And I like them both.
So I have to ask? How do you spell JOY?

I confess, I’m not good at keeping Jesus first in either scenario. It’s something I’m working on. I’m good at putting others before myself – until I’m not. Then I give up on the world and take care of me until I’m ready to give again. One of these days I hope to find the balance so I don’t need to go on strike to recover. Someday.

I’m not that good at it either. I’m selfish. I like to pretend that the entire world revolves around ME. I run hot and cold. I think that’s part of the human condition.
