Five Minute Friday – Join

5 minute fridayI participate in “Five Minute Friday” from Lisa Jo Baker’s Tales from a Gypsy Mama blog.  She provides a writing prompt, and I have five minutes to write to that subject.  No editing, no fussing.  Just. write.

People all over the web join in the free-writing exercise.  You can too.   I’d love to see your writing in the comments of her page or shared on your blog.  Just let me know what to look for and I’ll cheer you on.

Last week, I wrote about “stretch.”
Today, I write about “JOIN.”

I’m not a joiner.

I’m reluctant to walk up and join a group.  My social fears are too strong.  I always worry that someone else will walk away in protest of my existence.  I fear rejection.

I’m reluctant to join in to join in a Meme.  Once I start, how would I walk away?  I don’t want to feel trapped in the format of each and every Wednesday being wordless.  I fear commitment.

I’m reluctant to join in the reindeer games.  I fear I have a red nose.

I’m hesitant to join my children in sitting on the floor as they play zombie dinosaur mutant vampire wars.  I’m a girl, and it appears to be a “no girls allowed” kind of game.  Yet I don’t ask.  I fear my own assumptions.

So I stood on the sidelines of life, a silent watcher. For years, I watched… aching to join but unable to overcome my own fears.

My husband called me silly.  His logic?  If people couldn’t see how wonderful I am, then they didn’t deserve to be around my wonderfulness.  He said they had the problem, not me.

He was right.

And they love me.

Come join me in the reindeer games.  Red noses are awesome.

Joining in to Five Minute Friday was the best blogging decision I could have ever made!  Please join me.  I’d love to read what you write.

That’s it for Five Minute Friday.

  1. You are hilarious! I am so glad that you joined. I am not at all inclined to protest your existence (loved that line). It does seem like the internet waters are filled with sharks at times. f you look under the water, though, it’s generally just a funny fin hat and there’s a weird flowered swimsuit. So glad I found you. Hope you don’t mind if I poke around a little. I have a feeling there’s lots more funny hiding out and probably a lot of heart, too.

  3. I loved this and can relate to all of those feelings. I think personally I went from being too cautious and afraid to join groups to joining too many. Now, I’ve learned to think about what groups I want to join and why.

I know how you feel babe, going into unknown situations make me nervous too. Online it’s not too bad, but in public I feel silly but then it turns out wonderfully.

Getting my red nose now babe. I just keep forgetting about five minute Friday, I have to add it to my evernote.
