Five Minute Friday – Change

5 minute fridayI participate in “Five Minute Friday” from Lisa Jo Baker’s Tales from a Gypsy Mama blog.  She provides a writing prompt, and I have five minutes to write to that subject.  No editing, no fussing.  Just. write.

People all over the web join in the free-writing exercise.  You can too.   I’d love to see your writing in the comments of her page or shared on your blog.  Just let me know what to look for and I’ll cheer you on.

Last week, I wrote about “join.”
Today, I write about “CHANGE.”

Badges for the Weary Worn Out Mom

badges for the weary worn out momMotherhood is under-appreciated and we miss many milestones for the weary worn out mom to celebrate.

Oh sure, we’re good at celebrating out CHILDREN’S milestones.

We celebrate baby’s first word, baby’s first step, the first day of school.

But what about the milestones of motherhood?

For a weary and worn out mother, these may not be scrap-book or pin-worthy moments, but they deserve to be acknowledged and celebrated.

So I’ve got some badges for you.   [Read more…]

Analog or Digital Parenting

analog or digital parenting from thishappymom.comAnalog or digital parenting? Huh?

Choosing analog or digital isn’t as simple as I once thought.  Until recently, I never thought of it in the context of parenting.

For the past ten (or more) years of my life, I’ve been increasingly dependent on digital content over the traditional analog (or printed) methods.

Until a few weeks ago, I would have chosen digital over analog, electrons over paper.

But.

I’m now rethinking my stance.

Life Without Internet #2 – My Kids Make Me Laugh

Life Without InternetLife without internet isn’t entirely accurate. It’s more of a dramatic license thing. Technically, I still had my smart phone.

But for my kids, it was the end of the world as they know it.

Yep, it’s the “My Kids Make Me Laugh” edition to the “Life Without Internet” series.

If you think losing internet was traumatic for me as a blogger, you can only imagine how my kids reacted.   [Read more…]

Thankful Thoughts – Small Things

thankful thoughtsIt’s Sunday and time to pause and share some Thankful Thoughts with you.  This week, I’m thankful for small things.

Not all small things.

I’m not thankful for the tiny Legos I find on the floor in the dark at 2am with my bare feet.

I’m not tremendously thankful for the grit in my bed my children leave behind.

To be honest, I’m not even thankful for that small zit growing on the end of my nose.  Even if it is technically a small thing.

It just feels huge. [Read more…]

Help! My husband has engineering disease.

true confessions - engineering diseaseI love my husband dearly, but I swear he has engineering disease.

He rocks.  I knew I loved him the very first time he visited my house (way back when we were dating).  He fixed my garage door.  (swoon).

So I’m starting a series called “Confessions of an Engineer’s Wife” – because I own the blog and he can’t stop me.

(OK, technically, he could stop me.  He’s my webmaster.) [Read more…]

Ten Commandments of Car Line

Welcome to back to school season and the craziness that accompanies it.

If you’re looking for a little more encouragement, perspective, or just clean fun then I’ve got some great blog posts for you. I’ve rounded up all of my favorite school themed posts in one easy location just to make it easier to find them all.

10 commandments of car lineWith back to school in full swing, it’s time for moms and dads to spend an hour of their day in car line.  Oh joy.  We all love car line so much!

As a car line veteran, I have a few pointers I’d like to share with the newbies.

As a public service, of course.

I started to write the rules in a slightly different way.

  1.  We do not talk about car line.
  2.  We DO NOT talk about car line.

But I decided not to.  Instead, I give you this:

The Ten Commandments of Car Line

  1.  Thou shalt not honk. [Read more…]

My Kids Make Me Laugh – Colors Y’all

my kids make me laugh from thishappymom.comIf you’re wondering how my child’s color change at school yesterday could possibly make me laugh, just bear with me.  He did make me laugh… just not where he could see it.

It’s not the first time my husband and I have snickered at color changes either.  Watty says some amazing stuff trying to wiggle out of trouble.

Color changes?  Our school uses a color system to rate behavior each day.  Green means you had a great day.  Yellow means the teachers had to fuss at you to the point that they felt it was worth documenting it.  Red equals a trip to the office and a phone call home.

Red is for really bad stuff, like the time Joey pulled down his pants in Kindergarten to show Amanda his new Super Man underwear. [Read more…]
