Enough – Five Minute Friday

Five Minute Friday - Story I participate in “Five Minute Friday” from Lisa Jo Baker’s Tales from a Gypsy Momma blog.  She provides a writing prompt, and I have five minutes to write to that subject.  No editing, no fussing.  Just. write.

People all over the web join in the free-writing exercise.  You can too.   I’d love to see your writing in the comments of her page or shared on your blog.  Just let me know what to look for and I’ll cheer you on.

Two weeks ago, I wrote about “story.”  (there was no topic given last week).
Today, I write about “enough.”

I have enough stuff.  In fact, I have too much stuff!  This week, I began to have a place to unpack all my stuff.  After a year-plus long remodel, I’ve forgotten exactly how much stuff I own!  Two boxes of shoes and ten boxes of clothing that I absolutely don’t remember!  Weird.

I’ve had enough of the remodel mess.  I’m tired of sheetrock dust everywhere.  I’m tired of unfinished spaces.  I’ve had enough of sharing a bathroom with all the men in my family PLUS the construction workers.
But I’m hopeful.  I finally have enough space for all my books.  For over ten years, I’ve been making do with cramped bookshelves that I hated.  They were ugly and unsteady, tired and worn.  Hubby and I kept promising each other that one day we’d have enough money to buy the bookcases I really wanted.

When it came time to pack up for the remodel, the old bookcases went away.  All my books (all 20+ boxes) went into storage.

This week I got my bookcases.      I unpacked my books.       I have (more than) enough.

I am blessed.

I am thankful.

I have a passion for encouraging weary worn out mothers to find joy in everyday motherhood and peace in unlikely places. I have two elementary school boys, one nerdy husband, and two cats. I have a strange fascination for bad puns, the color pink, socks, and books. I worry about running out of toilet paper, wine, and chocolate.. I serve an amazing God. I live an ordinary life filled with wonder.

  1. Hi! Visiting from Lisa-Jo’s site. So glad you’re feeling settled and have a home for your books! Have a fabulous Friday!

  2. What an amazing feeling that must be. Books don’t like boxes. They like to be free to breath and call you to read. visiting from Gypsy Mama. Enjoy the unpacking.

    • LOL! I think my books are calling me. The best part was watching my 8 year old son. I have a lot of books from my childhood that he is now ready to ready. His face lit up at all the fantasy novels I put out where he can reach them. Very cute, and very rewarding as a mom.

Unpacking those boxes was very emotional – it was like I announced “I’m HOME!” to my heart.

  3. I had to smile as I read and thought, “Do all bloggers love to read as well?” I think they do, and your lovely post about your happiness in giving your books a new, permanent home seems to bear witness to my theory.
I am happy you’re able to leave chaos behind and enjoy your remodeled surroundings.

    • I think most bloggers have a love for the written word (the exception being the photo-bloggers, who are just as in love with visual imagery). I would stink at writing if I never had taken time to read the quality writings of others.

I love this idea of a 5 minute post! But no editing would definitely get me in trouble. I tend to type what’s in my head and then go back to edit it for the discerning public 🙂 So excited for you to be able to unpack!! Books are like friends. I’m glad your friends can now come out to play.

    • writing with no editing is tough, but that’s why i do this each week. it’s one of the few posts i write that is just for ME. my hope is that over time i’ll become a better writer. i know that my unedited posts have a slightly different “voice” to them because i haven’t taken the time to over-think what i’m putting on the page. i do use the spell checker though! there’s a limit to just how unedited i want to be.

i dare you to try it! i love discovering new blogs as i hop around to the different posts from the same writing prompt. i’m also totally humbled at how much deeper and more spiritual some people’s responses are.

Susan, I have to admit, I HAVE BOOKSHELF ENVY! I have books in boxes because I don’t have enough shelf space. Awesome post, awesome project. CONGRATS!
