Simple Steps Report: Dinner on the go

This morning, I posted a simple way to eat a healthy dinner no matter what your circumstances.   I thought I’d check back in with prices and a report of how my family responded.

I went to a Kroger in Houston Texas and made the following purchases:

  • Rotisserie Chicken $5.99
  • Watermelon Wedges $1.00
  • Bag of Baby Carrots $1.00
  • 4 pack of Yogurt with candy add-in $2.79

Total: $10.79

I could have done this for less if I did not have my kids with me.  On my own, I would have grabbed the 4/$1 yogurts or a big container.  That would have left me room for a 1 gallon jug of water for $0.79 and still stay under my $10 budget.

We ate this at home and used 4 real plates and 4 real spoons.  I served water we already had on hand.  The chicken bones got tossed back into the container the chicken came home in.  We had some baby carrots and watermelon leftover, but not much.  If we’d been on the road, I would have tucked the half bag of carrots into my cooler to eat the next day.

My family was happy with a simple dinner and there were no complaints.  No one snacked later in the evening, so I have to assume they were satisfied.

Vegetarian friends:  I spotted a container of humus for $2.49 that would have tasted great with carrots and pita chips.  Just a thought.
